Simply add a 6"x6" junction box at the end of the 30' length that came with your ATS and extend the wires accordingly. Example 8-3 for the hot neutral and ground, I use 14 gauge for the control wires. Don't worry about the control wire connectors just cut them off and splice the extensions in the J-box. When you get to the generator you can connect the control wires directly to the connection mounts.

An additional 15 feet can be added with the same gauge wire. If the total length goes beyond the recommended 45 feet, then the power wires must be upsized a gauge.

Please see the attached image; this shows the distances Generac recommends for placement of the generator. However, your local building codes might be more strict. Please consult your local code authority to ensure that the placement of your generator complies with local codes.

It will work, but you would have to install a 100 amp disconnect in line. We recommend ordering the unbundled parts instead so that additional cost and modification are not needed. If you would like to do this, we recommend ordering model # 5883, which is a stand-alone unbundled generator, and transfer switch model # RTSD100A3.

Yes. I assume you have natural gas which will require an 1 1/4" service line from the meter to the inside of your home if the generator is tied to the gas line on the house side of the meter and in most cases the meter itself will need to be up sized.

answer 2
It is wise to discuss the installation with either your local natural gas company or the plumber who is plumbing the fuel line and is familiar with local codes. Generac home backup generators require a fuel pressure of 5 - 7" of water column at the generator's fuel inlet. The distance from your home and the diameter of the fuel pipe all affect that incoming fuel pressure, as does the fuel regulator and meter. For those reasons, we always recommend consulting with an expert.

I would check with your local building code. Also 200 feet is a very long distance for the power to go. The resistance on that length will require a larger gauge wire.

We do not recommend installing beneath a car port, even if it is not near your home. The car port could trap exhaust fumes and cause a safety hazard.

Question

Do you need to install an extra 2 pole breaker as mentioned in appendix A step #11

In step #11 of the EZ Switch Installation, it says to install a 2-pole breaker in the distribution panel to protect the transfer switch?

I don't understand this step? Is this a breaker that is not supplied with the unit? I thought this unit was complete with the EZ switch?

The 2 pole breaker that you may be referring to is the 50 Amp 2 pole breaker that goes into the main service panel that is then connected to the ATS. I know of to requirement to have a 2 pole breaker in the ATS to "protect" it. All the circuits assigned to the ATS are reserved for the circuits you want to connect to the generator.

An 8kW Guardian Series home backup generator can power up to a 2 ton central air conditioner--possibly 3 ton depending upon the other loads you want to back up. When sizing your generator it's important to consider all of the appliances you want to back up. We recommend discussing with a Generac dealer, who can help you size the generator according to your particular needs. To find one near you, please visit http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal...

Generac home backup generators are intended for outdoor installation and use only. They cannot be installed and operated indoors. The generator cannot be modified for safe indoor installation. We cannot stress enough the dangers of carbon monoxide in the engine exhaust; it can kill within minutes. For that reason, the generator must be installed and operated outdoors.

You can use the system “off Grid” be sure to ground the unit with an 8’ grounding rod that is fully driven below ground. If you’re thinking of doing this as an ongoing primary source of electricity I'm not sure it would be cost prohibitive.

The Guardian home standby generators are designed for backup to utility power only. The warranty would be void if this unit is used off grid. Unfortunately we do not have a solution for this type of application in California.
For applications outside of California, the EcoGen series is an automatic generator designed to easily integrate into an inverter and battery storage system typically used in off-grid applications.

The smallest propane tank we can recommend for use with our current 2013 and newer automatic standby generators that utilize an Evolution Controller is a 250 gallon tank. The answer above is referring to the 2010 Nexus Controller product only. The volume and pressure required for the unit can be located in the owner’s manual and installation guidelines that are provided with the unit. The fuel consumption for each model number can vary, and we recommend ensuring the documentation utilized reflects your particular generator’s model number. A timer or relay is not recommended for turning the generator off and on again during an outage. The recommended procedure to follow for turning the generator off would be to 1) turn the generator breaker to the "off" position, 2) turn the main electrical panel breaker to the "off" position, 3) turn the generator control switch from the "auto" to the "off" position, and 4) remove the fuse. To put the generator back into service, you should follow this process in reverse.
