Compatibility between the Guardian Series automatic standby generator and another brand’s transfer switch cannot be guaranteed, as the generators are tested for compatibility with only Generac products. The Guardian Series generators require four wires for power leads; two hot legs, a neutral, and a ground.

Generac designs our standby generators with sound attenuated panels and an aluminum, steel, or composite enclosure to minimize noise whenever possible. You can also set the day and time of the weekly exercise cycle to ensure the least amount of interruption. We do make our best effort to manufacture our home standby generators to meet the noise level expectations of our customers. However, there are certain elements of operation that must be considered with an air-cooled engine driven product such as air flow requirements that limit our ability to further sound-proof the enclosure. Generac does not offer other accessories to allow for quieter operation.

The 10kW unit weighs 387 pounds. To protect the unit from theft, there is the option to anchor the unit to a concrete pad utilizing the 1 3/16 ” diameter bolt holes in the interior of the enclosure. A diagram of the hole locations is included in your owner’s manual under the Installation Diagrams section. When the unit is delivered, there will be bolts already occupying those spaces, as that is how the composite mounting pad is connected to the base of the generator. You would remove the existing bolts in order to properly anchor the generator and composite mounting pad to your concrete pad. The bolt diameter should equal that of the existing bolts, and should be a height of approximately three inches; however, the distance as to which the bolts are sunk into the concrete would be determined either by your local inspector if mounting is required by local code or by your installer to ensure that the unit is properly anchored.

The automatic standby generators can be manually started and stopped at the unit, but you must interact with the control panel on the generator itself as well as the transfer switch to do this. It is not possible at this time to remotely start and stop your generator during a power outage. Please follow the shut down procedure in the owner’s manual under the Checking the Engine Oil Level section to perform this function safely. To locate a copy of the owner’s manual, search the model or serial number for the unit here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

During times where snowfall is expected, you will want to ensure that snow and/or ice is cleared off of, and away from, the enclosure. There should be no snow piles or large accumulations of snow within three feet of the unit to ensure proper air flow if the unit were needed in an outage. Failure to keep the unit clear of snow can cause the unit to shut down, and could potentially cause irreparable damage to the unit due to overheating.

There is not a set time frame that you can expect your generator to run during an extended outage, but there are items we can recommend to ensure proper operation of your generator during an outage. First, always ensure you are having your generator properly maintained and serviced. Secondly, we recommend shutting the unit down after every 24 hours of operation to check oil levels and other maintenance items, such as the air filter. This will help make certain that the unit will continue without flaw when called upon to run for an extended period of time. After these maintenance items have been checked, the unit can be restarted. You can find further information regarding 24 hour shut down in the Checking the Engine Oil Level section of the owner’s manual that is provided with the unit.

The current models of automatic standby generators will have LED indicator lights on the side compartment of the generator. A green LED light will indicate that the unit is in AUTO mode and is ready to run, or is running properly during a utility outage. The yellow LED light will indicate that maintenance is needed. The red LED will indicate either that the unit is switched to OFF or that there is an alarm detected. If a yellow or red LED are present, you will need to check the generator’s control panel, as it will describe the type of maintenance needed or the alarm present. This information can be found in the owner’s manual as well. You can find a copy of the owner’s manual online by searching the model or serial number of the unit here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

The Guardian Series air cooled automatic standby generators require a minimum clearance of 36” from the ends (short sides) of the generator. However, the distance required from the unit to any window, vent, door, opening into the home, and trees, plants or shrubs over 12” in height is a minimum of 60”. Please see the attached installation diagram which includes clearance information. Further information on proper installation can be found in the installation guidelines. We as the generator manufacturer are unable to make recommendations regarding the conduit, and whether they may be run side by side, or what distance is required between two separate conduits. We recommend checking with your local inspector, as local codes may regulate these distances and locations.

Hi
I have a 10kw 6051 generator with a Nexus controller and a 200amp auto transfer switch. The installation manual call for two conduits, one for power and one for control. I plan to install 1- 1 1/4" conduit for the power and 1- 1/2" conduit for the control. Both conduits will be pvc and run next to each other for aprox 25'. My question is, is this acceptable?

For proper wire and conduit sizing, you will need to check your local codes or consult a certified electrician. We as the manufacturer are unable to make these recommendations due to the fact that there are many variables that come into play, such as distance run, the type of wire utilized, and whether the wires are above or below ground. Local codes will also dictate if two separate conduits are required, and in the event a second conduit is necessary, a second hole can be made on the unit’s enclosure. The square knock out on the back of the unit is provided to allow easy installation of the wireless remote monitor accessory. This knock out should not be utilized for other purposes.

Question

I have a 10KW Guardian and an Advanced remote. Do you have a list of the warning and alerts and what each mean?

I looked throughout the manuals and did not see a listing of the Nexus controller or the Advanced 2010 remote concerning the alerts that get diaplayed. It would have been helpful when I had a "Check the battery" alert to know what it meant and what to check. The unit is new and I appreciate the design.

A list of the alarms and warnings that the generator and wireless remote monitor can display is listed in the generator owner’s manual under the Protection Systems section. Alerts such as “inspect battery” and “inspect air filter” are maintenance reminders asking you to visually inspect the items referenced to determine if they need to be attended to or changed. The Guardian Series automatic standby generators are designed to be a back up to utility power. Provided the unit is installed at a location with utility power, the generator can function as designed as long as the solar electric power will be isolated in the event of a utility outage. Isolating the solar electric power means that the power provided from this source is unable to feed into the home during an outage or during times where the generator is in operation and providing power to the home. If the solar electric power source is not isolated during a utility outage, it can either back feed into the generator – which could cause damage and void the factory warranty - or it can cause the generator to run improperly, as it can see the supply of power from the solar electric power source. Prior to purchasing, you may want to speak to a Generac Certified Dealer or your local certified electrician to ensure that this type of isolation is possible with your existing set up. To locate a certified dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal.... We as the manufacturer are unable to recommend methods to achieve this isolation, as each installation will vary.

The Guardian series automatic standby units are designed as a back-up to utility power only. Utilizing the unit in place of utility – prime power – will void the unit’s warranty. When properly installed at a location with utility service present, and set to the Automatic mode, the unit will recognize a power outage, start, and transfer to provide power to the residence. The generators do not have the ability to program a start and stop cycle as you have described. If during an outage it is required to stop the unit, the automatic standby generators can be manually started and stopped at the unit, but you must interact with the control panel on the generator itself as well as the transfer switch to do this.

Operating a unit at half load means that you are drawing no more than half the rated output power; for a 10kW unit, operating on half load while utilizing propane means the items that are running are only requiring 5kW (5000 watts) of power. We recommend working with your local certified dealer or local certified electrician to determine the amount of power required for the items you deem necessary to run. The 10kW automatic standby generator should utilize a rigid fuel line no smaller than 3/4” in diameter to allow proper operation. The actual rigid fuel line utilized may need to be larger in diameter, depending on each individual installation’s distance from the fuel source. The one foot flexible fuel line supplied with the unit will not affect the operation of the generator provided that the installed rigid fuel line is adequately sized based on the generator’s volume and pressure requirements. The volume and pressure required for the 10kW unit utilizing natural gas is 156,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” of water column, and if utilizing propane is 176,400 BTU/hr with 10-12” of water column.
