The volume and pressure required for the 10kW unit utilizing natural gas is 156,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” of water column, and if utilizing propane is 176,400 with 10-12” of water column. Sizing should be based on the full load requirements of the unit. This information can be located on the spec sheet for each unit under “Fuel Consumption”. Spec sheets for all of our automatic standby units are located here: http://www.generac.com/Residential/....

The battery charger is integrated into the control panel of the generator. The T1 line that goes from the transfer switch to the generator will provide the power to the battery charging system. This T1 line requires 120 volts on the load side (from utility), and will need to be installed by a certified installer or electrician as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit.

I have a Concrete Pad and have set the unit on it in accordance with the instructions, but the Drawing on page 35 does not tell How or what size bolts to use to attach the unit to the concrete Pad - -by size I mean Length and diameter.
Even no statement of how to get the hole opened to get a bolt to fit in it.
Any help you can offer would be GREATLY APPERICATED.

The 10kW automatic standby unit can be mounted to a concrete pad using the 1 3/16 ” diameter bolt holes in the interior of the enclosure. When the unit is delivered, there will be bolts already occupying those spaces, as that is how the composite mounting pad is connected to the base of the generator. You would remove the existing bolts in order to properly anchor the generator and composite mounting pad to your concrete pad. The bolt diameter should equal that of the existing bolts, however the distance as to which the bolts are sunk into the concrete would be determined either by your local inspector if mounting is required by local code, or by your installer to ensure that the unit is properly anchored.

Our 10kW and 14kW automatic standby generators will run off of either natural gas or propane. For units that would utilize diesel fuel, we would recommend looking into our industrial units, which can be purchased through your local certified Industrial dealer. The 10kW automatic standby generator can run indefinitely, as long as the unit has the proper amount of fuel and oil. As recommended in the owner’s manual, the unit should be shut down every 24 hours of continuous use to check oil levels.

The 10kW automatic standby generator is rated for a continuous output of 10,000 watts when utilizing propane, with a rated amperage of 41.6 amps at 240 volts. When utilizing natural gas, the unit is rated for a continuous output of 9,000 watts, with a rated amperage of 37.5 amps at 240 volts You will want to ensure that all of the items you intend to run will not exceed this rating. The RTSD100A3 will have load shedding capabilities, with two contactors pre-wired and designated for use with air conditioning units, and four other contactors for use with larger loads. These four separate contactors will each require their own DLM if the contactor is used. . To properly determine the correct size generator and transfer switch for your needs, we recommend working with your local certified dealer or local certified electrician. To locate a certified dealer in your area, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/.

If utilizing natural gas from a well, you will want to ensure that the fuel has a BTU content of at least 1,000 BTUs per cubic foot. The fuel must also be supplied to the 10kW generator at a volume and pressure of 156,000 BTU/hr at 5-7” water column. If these requirements are not met, the unit will not run properly, which can cause damage to the unit. Further information regarding fuel requirements can be found in the owner’s manual. To locate a copy of the unit’s manual online, search the model number here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

Question

Programmable Inhibit/Enable time functions

Our local bi-laws restrict times at which a standby generators may be operated, for example, it is not permitted to have a generator run during the night.

Is there a program function that restricts the generator from starting or likewise to shut it down if it was running during a programmed “no-running-allowed” period?

Alternatively, is there in input to the control unit that accepts either a dry contact or input signal that the owner could use to enable or disable the unit from running?

This would be ideal to ensure compliance to local bi-laws and ensure fines are not issued for when the home owner is not home during the power outage or is the last one in the neighbourhood to wake up to manually shut the unit down.

Currently Generac does not have an accessory or program function for the automatic standby generators to automatically prevent it from running during particular times. When put into the AUTO mode, the unit will recognize a utility outage, start, and transfer power. When the unit starts in an utility outage situation, it will need to be manually shut down at both the main distribution panel, and at the generator. There is currently no accessory to allow for remote starting and stopping during a utility outage.

Question

Breakin

It looks a new 10KW generator should have it oil changed after the first 10 hours of use. How much longer or shorter can that be? The reason I ask is it might turn out the the first power outage we have is longer than 10 hours. It would be much more convenient to wait until the outage was over to do the oil change.

The 10kW automatic standby generator should have its first full oil change after the first 8 hours of operation. We recommend that this oil change happens as close to that 8 hour mark as possible to ensure proper function of the unit. If it is not possible for the first oil change to occur at that 8 hour mark, it is recommended to change the oil immediately following an extended outage. A full maintenance schedule will be located in the owner’s manual under the Service Schedule section.

The 10kW automatic standby generator will not have the option to delay startup. Once utility power is lost, the generator will wait 10 seconds before starting. The models that do feature a startup delay are the 17kW and 20kW automatic standby generators. The startup delay feature for the 17kW and 20kW units will allow you to change the start up delay from 10 seconds to a maximum of 30 seconds.

The automatic standby units are designed to be hard-wired into a Generac brand automatic transfer switch for proper installation and will need to be installed by a certified installer or electrician as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit. The units are not compatible with a twist-lock connection, or a manual transfer switch, and to install it as such may void the factory warranty.

The Guardian series automatic standby units are designed as a back-up to utility power only. Utilizing the unit in place of utility – prime power – will void the unit’s warranty. The generator will continually monitor to ensure 240 volts utility power is available.

When installing an automatic standby generator with our EZ Switch transfer switch, the 30 foot pre-wired whip from the transfer switch to the junction box can be extended up to 15 feet further, while the 5 foot pre-wired whip from the generator to the junction box cannot be altered. If the provided pre-wired whips are too short, you will need to discard the pre-wired whips and have your certified installer or electrician install new wiring and conduit suitable for the distance needed. Generac does not have any wiring harnesses or extension kits to accommodate a longer distance.

Question

10kw EZ-Transfer switch Neutrals

I have a 10kw standby Generator. It came with a 12 circuit EZ Transfer Switch. I am wondering why I have to wirenut the branch circuit neutrals from my main panel to the neutral wires provided with the transfer switch? The Transfer switch has a #6 white wire to connect to the (House) main panel neutral bar which makes all the neutral bars connected (ATS and House Panel) So why do I need to move my Main panel neutrals to the transfer panel wires? Neutral is neutral and with the grounds being seperate in the transfer switch we are not paralleing the ground and neutral wire. It is obvious as to wiring the "Hots" but the Neutrals??? Confused here.......

Thanks

The neutral wires for both the EZ Switch and the Nexus Smart Switch will connect to the neutral bar in the main panel. The EZ Switch has individual neutral wires for each circuit breaker that can be connected to the neutral bar, however, local code may not require individual neutrals from the breakers to be connected, and we suggest checking with your local inspector to verify.
