The 14kW automatic standby generator has a start up delay; once utility power is lost, the generator will wait 10 seconds before starting. If utility power returns during this 10 second delay, the generator will not start. If the utility power has not returned during this 10 second delay, the generator will start and transfer, providing power to your home until utility power does return.

Question

How far away may I place this unit from my home?

I would like to install this unit about 100ft away from my home. I will have rigid conduit installed in the ground between the generator and the transfer switch.
Is this type of installation possible?
I will also plan on ordering the accessory remote display for convenience.

You can install it that far away, but you will need to make a voltage drop calculation on your supply wire. Your wire size will increase due to the distance, which will also affect your conduit size.

answer 2
It is possible to place the unit about 100 feet away from your home. However, we recommend installing the generator as close as possible to the transfer switch and fuel supply to reduce the length of piping needed. Laws and codes may regulate the distance and location of your installation.

answer 3
The limit of distance is your budget for wire and depending on the placement of fuel source, the piping. At 100 feet between the Gen-Set and the Transfer Switch / Panel, I would recommend #4 copper wire type THHN in PVC conduit, or #4 copper wire type USE in direct burial. The #4 AWG wire is recommended to minimize voltage drop and to minimize amperage draw of motorized equipment. The advantage of installing conduit is that it does not need to be burried as deep and the control circuit wiring can be placed in the same conduit as the power wiring. Please verify wire sizing and grounding requirements of your local authority having jurisdiction. If utilizing natural gas, in order to minimize the pipe size, I suggest that you contact your local utility company and see if they will provide a 2 PSI source and place a regulator at the Gen-Set. If operating on Propane, either place the Tank in the vicinity of the Gen-Set, per local code, or run a medium pressure source to the Gen-Set and then place the low pressure regulator at the Gen-Set. Remember that in either case the Regulator Vent must be piped away from the Gen-Set for safety reasons. Remember to follow the recommended break-in procedure and to install the proper Engine Oil upon completion of the break-in period. Emergency use is not a substitute for proper break-in! Good Luck with your installation.

We used to install generators with one tank and found that in some cases a "vaporization" process occurred which stop the generator from running. The LP gas company we use found that using 2 tanks helped to resolve the problem. As a normal practice we now install 2 tanks when we have LP applications

answer 2
The answer depends upon how long you would like the generator to run continuously in a power outage. The 14kW Guardian Series consumes 2.30 gal/hr of liquid propane at full load. At that rate, you will have a little over 43 hours of continuous running time before your are out of fuel. You should size your propane fuel supply based upon how long you would want the generator to run in a power outage.

The only running requirements regarding LP fuel are regarding fuel pressure. At the generator inlet, fuel pressure must be 10 - 12" of water column for the generator to operate properly.

For additional fuel consumption information, please see the product spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

I would not recommend you do that. First the vibration and noise level will be more intence. Second your local building code may not allow you to do so. I would suggest that you build a 3' x 5' 2"x4" PT appron. Lay landscaping fabric on the bottom and fill with 3/4" crushed stone. This will reduce vibration and noise.

Question

Can I use an existinting natural gas line to connect and power my generator?

I already have a natural gas line that runs from my basement underground out to the back yard of my home. This line was previously used for a gas grill. I would like to use this line as the power source for my generator. Is that OK?

I am interested in either the Guardian 10KW or 14KW unit.

Most gas grills use less fuel than an automatic generator, so the existing line may not be sufficient. The gas line should be sized by a Generac dealer or a certified plumber, based on the volume and pressure required. For volume at full load, the 10kw requires 156,000 BTU/hr, and 220,000 BTU/hr for the 14kw. The pressure needed for both units is 5-7 inches of water column.

The smallest propane tank we can recommend for use with our current 2013 and newer automatic standby generators that utilize an Evolution Controller is a 250 gallon tank. The answer above is referring to the 2010 Nexus Controller product only. The volume and pressure required for the unit can be located in the owner’s manual and installation guidelines that are provided with the unit. The fuel consumption for each model number can vary, and we recommend ensuring the documentation utilized reflects your particular generator’s model number. The 14kW automatic standby generator is designed to be run off of natural gas supplied by a utility line, or propane supplied by tank. The smallest propane tank a unit can run off of is 120 gallons. Natural gas is not able to be compressed in the same manner that propane is, so running off of a natural gas tank is not recommended. The volume and pressure required for the 14kW unit utilizing natural gas is 220,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” of water column, and if utilizing propane is 211,680 with 10-12” of water column.

The 14kW automatic standby unit can be mounted to a concrete pad using the 1 3/16 ” diameter bolt holes in the interior of the enclosure. A diagram of the hole locations is included in your owner’s manual under the Installation Diagrams section. When the unit is delivered, there will be bolts already occupying those spaces, as that is how the composite mounting pad is connected to the base of the generator. You would remove the existing bolts in order to properly anchor the generator and composite mounting pad to your concrete pad. The bolt diameter should equal that of the existing bolts, and should be a height of approximately three inches; however, the distance as to which the bolts are sunk into the concrete would be determined either by your local inspector if mounting is required by local code, or by your installer to ensure that the unit is properly anchored.

We recommend shutting the unit down after every 24 hours of operation to check oil levels and other maintenance items, such as the air filter. This will help make certain that the unit will continue without flaw when called upon to run for an extended period of time. After these maintenance items have been checked, the unit can be restarted. You can find further information regarding 24 hour shut down in the Checking the Engine Oil Level section of the owner’s manual that is provided with the unit.

The 14kW unit can cover a wide range of household appliances and items, however the exact items it can cover will vary for each application. The 14kW automatic standby generator is rated for a continuous output of 14,000 watts when utilizing propane, with a rated amperage of 58.3 amps at 240 volts. When utilizing natural gas, the unit is rated for a continuous output of 13,000 watts, with a rated amperage of 54.2 amps at 240 volts. You will want to ensure that all of the items you intend to run will not exceed this rating.

We recommend stopping the unit and checking the oil after 24 hours of straight operation and changing the oil and oil filter after 200 hours of operation. It may be necessary to top off the oil during an extended outage since all air cooled engines do consume a minor amount of oil.

To begin this process, turn off the breaker on the generator to take the load off of it. Then turn the auto/off/manual switch on the control panel to the off position. Once this is complete, an oil change can be done if required.

We design standby generators specifically for extended run times, so having it run for a week or longer is definitely possible. Your only limitation is the fuel type, meaning the size of your propane tank or the supply of natural gas. For natural gas at ½ load, the 14kW uses 156 cubic feet per hour. For liquid propane at ½ load, the 14kW uses 1.56 gallons per hour. Refer to the 14kW spec sheet for additional fuel consumption data. http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

We also recommend stopping the unit and checking the oil after 24 hours of straight operation and performing scheduled maintenance after 200 hours of operation.
