Yes, the generator is designed to run that long, and many of our units have done just that after hurricanes have knocked out power. We actually recommend shutting the unit down and checking the oil level every 24 hours during an extended outage.

This model does not come with any wiring. However, model # 5872 does come prepackaged with a pre-wired 14-circuit automatic transfer switch. The pre-wired whip for connecting to the external generator connection box is 30' long. The pre-wired whip for connecting to the electrical panel is 2' long.

Question

Does this unit have a battery conditioner?

I drove a fire truck for years. Even though it was run every other day or so, we had a battery conditioner in it to be CERTAIN that the battery wouldn't go dead. Does this generator have one in it? If not, is there room inside the housing to install one (they're about the same size as a battery charger, and run on 120 volts).

The unit does not have a battery conditioner. However, the battery is charged via a circuit in the generator controller, which charges the battery using utility power. It also exercises once a week to ensure that it will run in a power outage.

The generator will produce its rated output regardless of the size of the fuel pipe. The size and length of the fuel pipe do, however, affect the input fuel pressure, which must be 5 - 7" of water column at the generator fuel inlet for natural gas. We recommend discussing your particular application with a Generac dealer, who can help make sure your fuel line is sized appropriately. Still need dimension specific site preparation answer

I am purchasing a 14K Generac from Home Depot, model 5872. It comes bundled with a composite pad. What are the demensions of the composite pad and does it have a larger foot print than the generator itself? The manual is not very helpful in this respect, as it makes no mention of the pad.

The pad only extends very slightly beyond the dimensions of the generator itself. The dimensions of the unit (with the pad) are 48.3" long x 25.3" wide. Regardless of whether you are installing the unit on pea gravel or on a concrete pad (the selection of which depends upon your local building codes), you can keep the generator on the composite pad.

For additional information about site preparation, please see the installation guide (http://goo.gl/IRJDj).

Question

A prev answer notes the 14kW requires a 1"pipe for propane, but I have a 1/2" that was just installed directly from the propane tank; it it OK?

I cannot find any note in the installation or instruction manual that statest that 1" pipe is required. The propane company installed 1/2" flexible copper piping and the generator works fine. The propane line does not feed any other appliances, it comes directly from the propane tank.
Thank you for your advice.

The cold weather kit is recommended if the temperature in your area regularly falls below 32° F. It is during these times that the generator can have starting issues if the battery warmer and crankcase heater are not installed.

Our home standby generators up to 45kw come set from the factory for natural gas but are easily field convertible to propane. To convert from natural gas to propane, and vice versa, you will want to reference the section in the owner’s manual titled “Reconfiguring the Fuel System.” This section of the manual will detail the steps to convert from natural gas to propane, and back, for each of our different models.
