Question

14kw fuel usage under 1/2 load

Will the 14kw unit able to run less that 1/2 load, my total connected load at worse case is 12kw but normal load would 3-4kw average. Will the generator cut back and use less fuel than advertised at 1/2 load or is that the minimum speed?

The 14kW automatic standby generator is able to run any load applied, as long as it does not exceed the output power of the generator. The unit will consume less fuel with a smaller load, however we only test the fuel consumption at half and full load, therefore we are unable to provide consumption information for less than half load.

The 14kW automatic standby generator can be run manually to test fuel pressure as long as a battery is installed within the unit. If the generator is not yet activated, follow the prompts on the control panel until the Activation step appears. Skip this step by selecting the escape key; you will be able to return and activate the unit when it is fully installed. Utilizing the AUTO/OFF/MANUAL toggle switch on the generator’s control panel, run the unit in manual mode.

Please see the attached guide for oil recommendations for your generator. Synthetic is a good oil to use if you are looking for a general year-round oil for areas that have significant season changes. If you are unsure as to what weight oil is in the unit, it is advisable to perform a full oil change, including changing the oil filter, as you do not want to mix different weight oils.

The 14kW unit can cover a wide range of household appliances and items, however the exact items it can cover will vary for each application. The 14kW automatic standby generator is rated for a continuous output of 14,000 watts when utilizing propane, with a rated amperage of 58.3 amps at 240 volts. When utilizing natural gas, the unit is rated for a continuous output of 13,000 watts, with a rated amperage of 54.2 amps at 240 volts You will want to ensure that all of the items you intend to run will not exceed this rating. To properly determine the correct size generator for your needs, we recommend working with your local certified dealer or local certified electrician.

The 14kW automatic standby generator is designed to be a back up to utility power. Provided the unit is installed at a location with utility power, the generator can function as designed as long as the wind or solar electric power will be isolated in the event of a utility outage. Isolating the wind or solar electric power means that the power provided from this source is unable to feed into the home during an outage or during times where the generator is in operation and providing power to the home. If the wind or solar electric power source is not isolated during a utility outage, it can either back feed into the generator – which could cause damage and void the factory warranty - or it can cause the generator to run improperly, as it can see the supply of power from the wind or solar electric power source. Prior to purchasing, you may want to speak to a Generac Certified Dealer or your local certified electrician to ensure that this type of isolation is possible with your existing set up.

Sizing for an automatic standby generator should be based on the maximum load you will apply to the generator, as the continuous load rating for the generator should exceed the loads you intend to run. We do not provide surge or start-up wattage ratings for this reason. As a recommendation, the continuous load rating should exceed your expected wattage and amperage requirements by approximately 20%. This will ensure proper operation and will prevent the generator from becoming overloaded.

An underspeed alarm will show when the engine is not able to come up to its full speed of 3600 RPM. There can be many causes for this, including, but not limited to, low fuel pressure or bad spark. We would recommend first contacting your gas line installer to ensure that the fuel pressure is proper. If the fuel supplied to the unit is adequate, then we would recommend contacting your local certified service technician. To locate a certified service technician in your area, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal.... We recommend contacting your gas line installer first, as ensuring correct fuel pressure is the first step in the troubleshooting process, and if applicable, would fall under improper installation under the warranty statement.

Question

Natural Gas Supply Requirements for 14KW (pipe sizw, #, flow)

My residence has a 340K BTU/HR rated meter, 3/4" supply pipe delivered at a standard 7" H2O residential supply pressure.
The 12-14 KW generator will be placed within 5' of the meter with <= 4 elbows. My only other NG appliance is an 80K BTU package unit furnace (actually 40K BTU but assuming 2X for safety margin). The total flow requirements of both appliances is less than the supply regulator/meter rating.
Will the 7"H20, 3/4" supply at the generator inlet be adequate to support generator peak loading for motor load starting amps, etc. while maintaining a stable 60Hz/240VAC ?
A 1"supply pipe to a 2 psi NG regulator to the generator with a second 7" H20 for household loads may be an ideal arrangement but would be significantly more expensive to implement.
If my existing NG supply is inadequate for the 12-14KW application then what is the maximum KW generator it will support without modification?

The gas line should be sized by a Generac certified dealer or a certified plumber, based on the volume and pressure required. The volume and pressure required for the 14kW unit utilizing natural gas is 220,000 BTU/hour with 5-7” of water column. Each installation will vary, so we as the manufacturer are unable to determine the largest unit your particular set up can support. Your local Generac certified dealer or certified plumber will be able to help determine the proper unit for your needs.

Question

What if I undersized the generator?

I have a newly installed 14kw guardian. I have an air conditioner which is not run very often, as well microwave, well pump, electric range. Oil heat and hot water. Your sizing chart indicates that my house size and climate requires a larger unit. What happens in the event of an overload? Will there be an overload if the air conditioners {2 mini splits) is not run? Most of the outages in this area take place in winter.

Our automatic standby generators are protected from overloads as they are equipped with main line circuit breakers in the access door on the side of the unit, as well as they have overload and under voltage protection programmed into the control board. If a generator that is too small is installed, you could potentially damage items in your house if the generator becomes overloaded, as an overload can reduce the output voltage momentarily, which could affect sensitive electronic in your home, such as computers, TVs, etc. The protections in the generator are in place to ensure these types of overloads don’t happen, but not every situation can be prevented.

Question

Adding an air conditioner

I intend to add a new air conditioner. My 14kw Guardian is hooked up to a transfer switch for the whole house. The Generac usage table indicates that the 14kw will be undersized with the new a/c. Although the generator will probably only be needed during the winter months, what will happen if the generator does turn on when the a/c is on.

The automatic standby units are designed to be hard-wired into a Generac brand automatic transfer switch for proper installation and will need to be installed by a certified installer or electrician as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit. The units are not compatible with a twist-lock connection, or a manual transfer switch, and to install it as such may void the factory warranty. Operation of the unit strictly in the manual mode will also prevent the unit from performing its weekly automatic test, which is necessary to keep the unit functioning properly.

Question

Is there a chart to help us size what size gas line is needed?

I'm planning on purchasing your 14kw Guardian , the generator will be 200ft away from our 500 gallon propane tank. Gas company says to bury 1/2 inch polyethylene yellow gas pipe. Reading some of your sites Q&A it mentions .75 to 1.25 . Is there a chart to help us size what size gas line is needed? Also, I'm planning on running a 240v line to our kennel building to be split up into two 120v 10amp circuits (to run furnace blower & few lights). Do you have a small ATS for this purpose. The kennel building has its own 100amp service from the power company

National Electric Code requires that the frame and external electrically conductive parts of this generator be properly connected to an approved earth ground. Local electrical codes may also require proper grounding of the unit and transfer switch. We recommend that you consult with a local electrician for grounding requirements in your area.

For our automatic standby generators, if you expect the temperature to drop below freezing, we recommend utilizing a 5W-30 Synthetic oil, which can be used year round. We also recommend using a cold weather kit, which includes a battery warmer and a crankcase heater. The cold weather kit compatible with our current 14kW automatic standby generator is model 5947. If you are unsure as to whether this kit will fit your generator, either contact your local certified dealer or call Generac directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722) with your generator model and serial number. A cold weather kit can be purchased through your local certified dealer. To find a certified dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

Question

what is the preferred location on housing for electrical conduit entry?

I am setting a generator (Model 6052) behind my home. Both the conduits with the power conductors and control wires are run overhead on the underside of the deck, and down a deck support column to the generator. There is a small plugged entry designated as "cable entry" on the rear side of the generator but a conduit in this location would interfere with the hinged cover. What location is best for the two flex conduit entries?

The 14kW automatic standby unit has only one knockout provided in the enclosure, 1 inch in diameter, as if a pre-wired switch is utilized, all of the necessary wiring will be contained within a single conduit. If a non-wired switch is used, your local codes will dictate if two separate conduits are required, but in the event a second conduit is necessary, a second hole can be made within the unit’s enclosure. If the provided knockout diameter is not large enough to accept your wiring, you can make that hole larger. The reason we do not provide additional knockouts is to prevent entry points for moisture, rodents or insects, and for on units with a metal enclosure, will help prevent rust points as well. Please see the attached diagram for cable access and fuel inlet locations.
