Question

I'm in an area where gas will come from a tank rather than an in ground utility. What is the 14KW consumption of fuel gas in 24 hours running time.

I'm trying to determine what size gas fuel tank I need to run the 14kw generac for 7 days between refills.

The 14kW Guardian Series consumes 2.30 gal/hr of LP fuel at full load. At that rate, it would consume 386 gallons of LP fuel over the course of seven days. For more fuel consumption specs, please see the spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

Question

Can I configure it to get more power?

I used this 14kw generator to power my home for 2 days during Irene. Only thing that would not work is my microwave. 120v a.c 60hz 13.0a with an operating freq of 2450mhz and output of 1000w. Normal Operating voltage of 4.0kv. Is there anything that I can tweak or am I just out of luck?

Question

What if I am away for more than 24 hours?

If a power outage occurs for let's say, 3 days or more and I'm not there to change/add oil, will it stop running after a certain time with no maintenance? The main reason I want to invest in this kind of unit is to have peace of mind if I am away. Having read a reply regarding maintenance issues after only 24 hours makes me leery.

Generac's home backup generators are specifically designed for extended use during power outages, and do not have running time limitations. Our only recommendation is that you manually shut down the generator and check the oil level after a continuous 24 hour running period, as all air-cooled engines will consume a small amount of oil through normal operation. If the oil level is less than full, simply top it off and return the generator to "auto" mode. Should you leave your home for an extended period of time, we recommend checking the generator oil level before you go, as you will not be able to check it if an extended power outage occurs. Additionally, if the engine oil level ever drops to a point where it could damage the engine, the generator does have a low oil pressure switch that will safely shut the unit down to protect it.

Question

wiring

I presently have a portable 8K generator and wiring and plumbing for LP gas in place.I know the LP piping will be adequate for a 14k stand alone generator I'm thinking of getting but the wiring (10 Gauge) is too light for the output of a 14k generator. Can I just run another 10 gauge cable next to the one I have in place now, tying them together at each end rather than tearing out the present wiring and replacing it with lets say number 6 cable ? I know 10 gauge is ok for 30 amps, wouldn't two cables of 10 gauge tied together at each end give me 60 amp carrying capability ? Please advise as my decision to get a 14k unit depends on my being able to use wiring I have in place with some additional cabling.

Typically a #4 wire is used between the generator and the transfer switch, and between the transfer switch and the breaker panel, but it may have to be a heavier gauge depending on the distance between the two. We recommend consulting a Generac dealer for more information. You can find a dealer near you by visiting http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal...

Because there are so many variables affecting the size of the incoming fuel line, we cannot provide you with a specific answer. We can tell you, however, the fuel consumption rates (as you asked) and fuel pressure that will help your installer determine the correct size gas line. For this unit, the required fuel pressure to the generator fuel inlet at all load ranges is 5 - 7 inches of water column for natural gas and 10 - 12 inches of water column for LP fuel. Regarding fuel consumption, at full load the 14kW Guardian Series uses 220,000 BTU/hr of natural gas or 211,680 BTU/hr of LP fuel. For additional fuel consumption information, please consult the spec sheet for this unit at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

Yes, the generator is designed to run that long, and many of our units have done just that after hurricanes have knocked out power. We actually recommend shutting the unit down and checking the oil level every 24 hours during an extended outage.

This model does not come with any wiring. However, model # 5872 does come prepackaged with a pre-wired 14-circuit automatic transfer switch. The pre-wired whip for connecting to the external generator connection box is 30' long. The pre-wired whip for connecting to the electrical panel is 2' long.

Question

Does this unit have a battery conditioner?

I drove a fire truck for years. Even though it was run every other day or so, we had a battery conditioner in it to be CERTAIN that the battery wouldn't go dead. Does this generator have one in it? If not, is there room inside the housing to install one (they're about the same size as a battery charger, and run on 120 volts).

The unit does not have a battery conditioner. However, the battery is charged via a circuit in the generator controller, which charges the battery using utility power. It also exercises once a week to ensure that it will run in a power outage.

The generator will produce its rated output regardless of the size of the fuel pipe. The size and length of the fuel pipe do, however, affect the input fuel pressure, which must be 5 - 7" of water column at the generator fuel inlet for natural gas. We recommend discussing your particular application with a Generac dealer, who can help make sure your fuel line is sized appropriately.
