A unit will show an alarm of “undervoltage” if the generator voltage falls below 60% of nominal for more than five (5) seconds, and the unit will then shut down. Essentially, the generator control panel is seeing that the unit is not putting out the correct voltage, and shuts down to protect your appliances. If you are experiencing an undervoltage alarm, we would recommend you contact your local certified servicing dealer. At full load, the 17kW consumes 2.57 gallons of LP per hour.

It is more common for a unit to run at 50% load, so your actual hours may be higher. For more fuel consumption information, please refer to the 17kW spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

answer 3
Engine horsepower can vary based upon the generator system and its application. Differences in generator output from model to model are due to differences in the alternator, not engine horsepower. When selecting a generator, the most important thing to consider is your power needs and choosing a generator that will provide the right amount of power for the tools and appliances you want to use.

answer 2
The 17kW Guardian Series automatic standby generator is a 120/240 volt single phase system. If you are utilizing an alternative energy source off grid, instead of utilizing commercial utility power, we would recommend considering our EcoGen Series automatic standby generator; however, at this time, the EcoGen is a 120 volt single phase system, with the option to purchase a 240 volt conversion kit. If the application is backing up commercial utility power, with the addition of solar panels for supplemental power, our commercial series products are available as a three phase system, in multiple different voltage configurations. Please note that both the Guardian Series and the commercial generators are designed as a back up to utility power only, and to utilize them in an off-grid application would void the factory warranty. We would also recommend contacting a certified dealer for assistance in determining the generator that would be best for this particular application. The residential and commercial series automatic standby generators are designed to be run off of natural gas supplied by a utility line, or propane supplied by tank. The unit will come from factory set for natural gas, but can be easily converted to propane during installation. They are not able to run off of any other fuel source. If you are looking for a gasoline powered generator, we recommend considering one of our portable generators. For further information on our available portable gasoline generators, please visit http://www.generac.com/Portables/.

answer 2
The over crank alarm occurs if the engine has not started within the specified crank cycle. This is defined as any of the following occurrences during cranking: 1. Not reaching starter dropout within the specified crank cycle. Starter dropout is defined as four (4) cycles at 1,000 RPM. 2. Reaching starter dropout, but then not reaching 2200 RPM within 15 seconds. In this case the control board will go into a rest cycle for seven (7) seconds, then continue the rest of the crank cycle. If you continue to experience this alarm, we would recommend first contacting your gas line installer to ensure that the fuel pressure is proper. If the fuel supplied to the unit is adequate, then we would recommend contacting your local certified service technician. To locate a certified service technician in your area, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal.... We recommend contacting your gas line installer first, as ensuring correct fuel pressure is the first step in the troubleshooting process, and if applicable, would fall under improper installation under the warranty statement.

Generac designs our standby generators with sound attenuated panels and an aluminum, steel, or composite enclosure to minimize noise whenever possible, but the units are not soundproof. You can also set the day and time of the weekly exercise cycle to ensure the least amount of interruption. We do make our best effort to manufacture our home standby generators to meet the noise level expectations of our customers. However, there are certain elements of operation that must be considered with an air-cooled engine driven product such as air flow requirements that limit our ability to further sound-proof the enclosure. Generac does not offer other accessories to allow for quieter operation.
The 17kW automatic standby generators, models 5873, 5885, 5886 and 6053, have an average decibel rating of 66, at a distance of 23 feet while operating at full load.

answer 2
When determining the amount of circuits included in a switch, each 120V circuit is counted only once, while a 240V breaker is counted twice. The 240V breakers are counted as two circuits as it is two separate 120V circuits combined into a double pole breaker, therefore, the switch is a total of 16 circuits. As long as the total amperage is not increased, multiple breakers may be replaced to meet your configuration needs. For example, if another 20 amp 120 volt breaker were needed, either two of the 15 amp 120 volt breakers could be removed and have a 20 amp 120 volt breaker installed, or a 30 amp 240 volt breaker can be removed and have a 20 amp 120 volt breaker installed. A single 15 amp 120 volt breaker cannot be replaced with a 20 amp 120 volt breaker as that is increasing the total amperage. We recommend speaking with your inspector for approval to modify the switch, as modifying the switch from the factory setting can void the UL listing. Your local codes may also require the use of arc fault breakers when replacing the already existing breakers.

The 17kW automatic standby generator will need to be installed as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit, and connected to an automatic transfer switch. Depending on the transfer switch selected, wiring may be included with the switch, or your certified installer or certified electrician will provide the wiring necessary for the installation. The other items needed for a complete installation will be the pea gravel base or concrete slab for proper mounting of the generator, the fuel supply line, and the battery. A cold weather kit and/or a wireless remote monitor may be added to the system at any time if desired, as no additional wires are required from the transfer switch to the generator. Both of these optional kits will include the appropriate wiring harness to be installed within the generator.

The spark plug wire on the Guardian Series automatic standby generators can be removed without any tools, and only requires to be grasped firmly, and pulled out at the angle in which it is installed. The spark plug itself will need to be removed using a socket wrench; utilizing a shorter handled socket wrench, and placing the socket onto the spark plug first, and then attaching the socket to the handle, will allow for easier access. In the event that a better angle is desired, the lid of the generator can be removed to allow servicing from behind the unit. If any additional assistance or maintenance is required, we would recommend contacting a certified servicing dealer. answer 2
When properly installed, the automatic standby generator should recognize the presence of utility power when set to the AUTO mode. If the generator is not recognizing that utility power is present, it is most often to do with the N1 and N2 utility sensing leads and fuses. In the transfer switch will be 5 amp fuses, one for each N1 and N2. If either or both of these fuses are blown, the generator would recognize the lack of utility power, and countdown to start. If the fuses are in good condition, we would recommend contacting your electrical installer for assistance in determining the proper installation of these wires. If the wires are loose, or are not connected, the generator would again recognize a lack of utility power, and countdown to start. If after inspecting the fuses and connections and it is determined all are in good condition and the unit continues to recognize a utility loss when utility is present, we would then recommend contacting a local certified servicing dealer for service and diagnostics on the unit. To locate a certified servicing dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

National Electric Code requires that a service disconnect be present at the first point of entry from the utility service. Depending on your local codes, a disconnect may be required on the exterior of the residence or business. The automatic standby units are designed to be hard-wired into a Generac brand automatic transfer switch and set to the AUTO mode for proper installation and will need to be installed by a certified installer or electrician as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit. The units are not compatible with a twist-lock connection, or a manual transfer switch, and to install it as such may void the factory warranty. Operation of the unit strictly in the manual mode will also prevent the unit to perform its weekly automatic test, which is necessary to keep the unit functioning properly. The generator also requires a constant 120 volt connection to ensure proper battery charging. Please note that any damage to the unit due to abuse, misuse or negligence is not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty; not running the unit can cause engine damage in the form of cracked, dried, or loose seals.

For our current model units, any available documentation would be located under the Owner Manual Search function on our website, http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu.... You will want to ensure you are utilizing the full model or serial number located on the unit for the best search results. The documents available may include the owner’s manual, installation guidelines, wiring diagrams, and exploded views with parts listings. Documents titled “WD” are a wiring diagram, while documents titled “EV” are exploded views.

The automatic standby generators do not need a break-in period with specific loads or extra run times. Current production models do not require the 8 hour break in, so if the manual indicates you do not need the 8 hour break in you could change the oil and filter and switch to the oil required for your locations expected temperature range.
If your manual recommends the 8 hours run time prior to the first oil change, we would advise against changing the oil and filter until that time is up. The generator can either be allowed to run its exercises to meet the necessary hours, or you can manually run the unit more often than the pre-set 12 minute weekly tests to meet the 8 hour requirement.

The GFCI protected receptacles located in the circuit breaker door on the side of the unit will only function when the unit is running in MANUAL mode, or when running automatically during a utility outage situation.
