The 20kW Guardian Series automatic standby generator has an hour meter that can be viewed on the generator’s control panel. To determine the hours of run time on the unit, you will navigate the control panel to the Status Menu, select the Display option, and choose Engine Hours. This will show the total run time of the engine in hours. Please see the attached menu map for assistance. The menu map is also located in the owner’s manual for the unit. The Guardian Series, and other automatic standby generators, are to be mounted to a stationary location only. They are not designed to be mounted to a mobile platform such as a truck or trailer. Mounting to a mobile location will void warranty, and may cause damage to the unit during continual transport. In the event a mobile generator is required, please consider our Mobile Power series, which can be found here: http://www.generac.com/Industrial/I....

All of our automatic standby generators have fuel consumption information for full and half load. It is difficult to determine fuel consumption for other loads as environmental and operational factors may affect the fuel consumption.
The volume and pressure required for the 20kW unit operating at full load utilizing natural gas is 294,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” water column, and while utilizing liquid propane is 267,120 BTU/hr with 10-12” of water column. The unit operating at half load while utilizing natural gas will need 206,000 BTU/hr, and while utilizing liquid propane will need 173,880 BTU/hr. The fuel consumption will continue to decrease as the load decreases.
If there are times during an outage where running the unit is not necessary, it can be shut down to conserve fuel by following the instructions in the owner’s manual under the section titled “Checking Engine Oil Level.” To locate a copy of the owner’s manual, search the model or serial number for the unit here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

The 20kW unit can cover a wide range of household appliances and items, however the exact items it can cover will vary for each application. The 20kW automatic standby generator is rated for a continuous output of 20,000 watts when utilizing propane, with a rated amperage of 83.3 amps at 240 volts. When utilizing natural gas, the unit is rated for a continuous output of 18,000 watts, with a rated amperage of 75 amps at 240 volts. You will want to ensure that all of the items you intend to run will not exceed this rating.
Our automatic standby generators and transfer switches can be set up into multiple configurations, including configurations where multiple transfer switches can be utilized, provided the installation meets all local, state, and national codes. Keep in mind that if you would like to use a load center option with a 20kW, you may want to utilize a sub-panel that contains all of the circuits deemed necessary for use in an outage situation, and protect the sub-panel with a single transfer switch, as our EZ Switches that include a load center option are not designed for use with a 20kW unit. We recommend speaking with your local certified dealer to determine the best generator and transfer switch set up for your application. To locate a certified dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

The 20kW Guardian Series automatic standby generator, model 5875, is a 120/240V 60 hertz product. Currently Generac does not offer a 20kW unit in a 50hz option. Any product currently offered is displayed on our website, which is updated immediately following any product release. If you are looking for a generator for non-domestic use, we recommend considering our 50 hertz Guardian series generators; information for these units can be located here: http://www.generac.com/Residential/....

Mark,

It is about as loud as a muffled lawn mower. The sound is very tolerable, but you will know that it is operating. I have it about 25' away from the side of my house. I am more concerned about CO than noise. Also, there have been reports of plants not surviving (due to heat) if they are in the direct path of the exhaust. The exhaust is rather forceful, as you would expect from a force aired system.

I would also recommend that you invest in the Nexus remote control (about $300). This is money well spent, it allows you to control all of the major operations (change exercise time/start/history, etc) all from the comfort of your home.

Also, consider swapping out the oil that came with the unit for 5W-30 fully synthetic oil. The oil that comes with is SAE 30 and is not rated below freezing. You can purchase an oil kit (with filter) from Generac.

Enjoy your new generator.

Take care,

David

The 20kW automatic standby generator is compatible with the 200 amp Nexus Smart Switch, but may not be the appropriate switch depending on your particular installation. If the transfer switch will be utilized as the service disconnect, the transfer switch needs to meet or exceed your incoming utility service. We recommend contacting your local inspector for restrictions or sizing requirements if using the transfer switch as your service disconnect. In the event that the transfer switch will be used to power a subpanel, the transfer switch must meet or exceed the rating of the subpanel. The transfer switch rating should never be less than the amperage rating that is being fed through the switch. We recommend contacting a Generac certified dealer for sizing and compatibility assistance. To locate a certified dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

A unit will show an alarm of “undervoltage” if the generator voltage falls below 60% of nominal for more than five (5) seconds, and the unit will then shut down. Essentially, the generator control panel is seeing that the unit is not putting out the correct voltage, and shuts down to protect your appliances. If you are experiencing an undervoltage alarm, we would recommend you contact your local certified servicing dealer. The spark plugs for the 20kW automatic standby generator are located below the valve covers on each side of the engine; one spark plug is towards the front of the enclosure, while the other is at the rear.
The spark plug wire on the Guardian Series automatic standby generators can be removed without any tools, and only requires to be grasped firmly, and pulled out at the angle in which it is installed. The spark plug itself will need to be removed using a socket wrench; utilizing a shorter handled socket wrench, and placing the socket onto the spark plug first, and then attaching the socket to the handle, will allow for easier access of the rear spark plug. In the event that a better angle is desired, the lid of the generator can be removed to allow servicing from behind the unit. If any additional assistance or maintenance is required, we would recommend contacting a certified servicing dealer. To locate a certified servicing dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

The flexible fuel line, as well as the other included accessories for the unit, will be located in the battery compartment, inside the generator enclosure. The battery compartment is located inside the lower right hand corner of the enclosure, below the control panel. To access the battery compartment you will need to remove the front panel of the enclosure. To do so, you will first need to open the top lid of the unit and then grasp the top of the front panel, and lift straight up, as if you are going to pull the panel over your head, and slightly towards your body. The flexible fuel line will either be included in the zip top bag with the other accessories, or will be zip-tied to the battery connection cables.
To replace the panel, align the bolts on the frame of the generator with the grooves on the front panel and slide the panel back in place.
