I have just purchased a 20kw unit for a new home that I am having built. Can this unit be placed on a formed plastic like pad or does it need to be concrete or pea gravel?

This unit comes with a composite mounting pad, and if your local codes will allow it, it can be mounted on this pad atop a pea gravel base. Consult your local building code authorities to see if this type of installation is acceptable or if a concrete pad is required.

Question

Does engine speed/fuel consumption step up in big increments or does speed/consumption increase proportionally?

As of yesterday my 20kW Guardian unit (5875) is outside my home waiting to be connected to my propane tank and electrical panel. I'm curious about how the motor speed increases and how the fuel consumption increases as the demand for electricity increases. I know the unit consumes 1.89 gph at 50% and 2.90 gph at 100%, so I don't need to have that quoted, I'm interested in knowing if the unit steps up speed (and fuel consumption) in small increments or if they increase in larger increments, say 25% at a time. In essence what I want to know is does the motor have only a few speed settings or does speed (and consumption) increase in direct proportion to the demand for electricity? Thanks.

The engine runs at a constant speed at all times. Increases and decreases in fuel consumption are a result of how hard the engine is working to drive the alternator at a constant speed and produce electricity. More loads cause the engine to work harder, and therefore consume more fuel.

Question

Owner's Manual 8, 10, 14, 16, 17 and 20 kW Air-cooled gen.

I have a 20kW generator on order. I was measuring things to make enough room for the items. Page 34 show the measurements on the transfer switch 42.5 by 20 inches, which seem too large, that is bigger than the 200 amp breaker box. I saw another link to the spec sheet which showed the transfer switch is 30 by 14 inches. Which is correct?
Second question; page 35 shows the fuel inlet 12-20 kW is 1/2 inch and 8 & 10 kW is 3/4 inch. Are these reversed?

Thank you,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. The manual is incorrect; the 30" x 13.5" measurement is correct. Regarding your second question, the values are not reversed--they are correct.

Generac does not recommend such an installation, because the generator must always be mounted on a non-combustible surface (a wooden base would not be acceptable), and Generac's warranty does not cover the cost of hoists or crances if a service issue should occur.

Question

Remote monitoring

I just had a 20 kw Guardian istalled at my home. I almost chose the competing Kohler product because of their Kohler OnCue Management System for 14/20RES(L) that allows remote monitoring and management on a Personal Computer via the internet. I would really like to have this ability as I travel frequently and would like to know when my generator is running so I could have a relative check and fill oil if necessary during extended outages. Is a similar offering being considered from Generac? If not are there 3rd party solutions available that would allow PC monitoring from the internet?
Thank you.

We recommend selecting oil viscosity based upon routine ambient operating temperature:

• SAE 30 for temps above 32° F
• 10W-30 for temps between 40° F and -10° F
• Synthetic 5W-30 for temps 10° F and below

Having said that, we recommend using either 10W-30 or synthetic 5W-30 when using the battery warmer (depending upon the average ambient temperature), since both will assist in starting the unit in cold weather.

Most homes today have a 200 amp service. If all the circuits in the panel want to have access to the power from the generator, an identical service rated switch is required (200 amp). Not all circuits pull power at the same time, so the unit will never be asked to produce 200 amps. If a smaller service such as 100 or 150 amps is present, service rated switches for those amperages are available as well.

The engine runs at a continuous speed, but as loads are applied it has to work harder to drive the alternator at this speed to produce reliable power. It is this effect that causes variations in fuel consumption.

Puting conduit through concrete pad.

I am installing a 20 KW unit. My local dealer said that I should stub conduit up through the concrete pad so the wires will all be inside the enclosure for hook up. Where should the conduit come through in relation to the enclosure going by the 6" set back rule from the sides and front. (Inches from front and either side of slab)

This unit does not accommodate a "stub up" installation through the concrete pad. The wiring is meant to be connected at the rear of the unit. As you are facing the unit, this would be on the upper right side in the back.

An additional 100 amp disconnect would be required. It would be a better idea to order the stand alone 20kW, 005887-1 and a 100 amp SE rated switch, RTSD100A3.

Question

Battery Exploding Concerns

I have a brand new 20KW model #58751. I have been reading on the web about so many exploding batteries. My control panel shows the battery at over 14 volts, my contractor says he does not check batteries but rather swaps them out every (3) years. That is not what the owners manuel recommends. Another contractor, as part of his annual maintenance contract, supplies a new battery every year. What is the proper procedures, with time lines, to prevent battery explosions?

Depending upon your location, climate can impact battery life and performance. Batteries perform more poorly in hot temperatures. The battery should be inspected every 6 months, per the owner's manual. Replacing the battery every two years is a good practice.

Question

Natural Gas Consumption

Note the consumptions in Cubic Feet Per Hour for natural gas:

Generac 20 KW: Full load--294, Half Load--206

Kohler 20 KW: Full load--281, Half Load--161

Onan 20 KW: Full Load--240, Half Load--135

Considering that the engines are of similar design, why is the Generac 20KW so inefficient, as compared to their competitors?

The Generac engine is just as efficient as the others you mentioned. Generac specifies a higher volume of fuel consumption to allow for better performance when the unit has a large load applied to it. The greater fuel volume allows for better response time and voltage control from the generator.
