Question

Stop Generator after extended time

I have a 20KW Guardian that is fueled by a 500gal propane tank. I would like to have the ability to disable the system after a certain run-time has elapsed (e.g. 2 days) to ensure that the generator does not drain the tank. Is there a method to turn the machine off automatically after an extended time?

An easy way that this can be done is by having your propane company install a level sensor that can give you the ability to monitor fuel level and give you the ability to take action at different settings set at you discretion .for example when it reaches 25 % fuel it can send a message to supplier by email that you will need a fill up... Or you to allow you to take action..

Generac brand automatic standby generators will perform as long as the unit is in the AUTO position, and utility power is absent; there is not a way to set up the system to be disabled after a specified period of time. Furthermore, we recommend stopping the unit after every 24 hours of continuous operation, for maintenance-related purposes described in the unit’s owner’s manual. Please note that any damage incurred to the unit when the unit is utilized for a period of time beyond these recommendations, or damage incurred due to a lack of proper maintenance is not covered under the product’s warranty. If you do not want the unit to run after a specified period of time, we would recommend turning the unit off via the unit’s control panel, and starting the unit back up once you would like to receive back-up power once again. If you have any other product-related inquiries, please contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

When Generac’s 20kw Guardian Series automatic standby generator, model number 6730, has been activated and prepared for operation, the control panel should in fact read, “Ready to Run” with a listing for the hours of protection since activation. Have you always had that smell?
If so contact your nearest Generac Dealer .
It is very important that the Dealer verify proper set up and installation. Also to verify any leaks that the generator may have beyond the gas inlet source.
For your safety and of others it is expedient that this issue be resolved ASAP

When installed appropriately, with the necessary configuration for supplying liquid propane fuel, the slight smell of propane is not uncommon. However, if you are concerned about the strength of the scent, we would recommend referring to your fuel line installer, to ensure that all connections were made appropriately, as a potential leak in the fuel line, or improper installation, could potentially be the cause of a stronger propane smell. Please note that the our automatic standby generators are manufactured for use with a natural gas fuel source out of the factory; the unit would need to be reconfigured for use with a liquid propane fuel source, per the recommendations listed in your unit’s owner’s manual.

I am under the impression that you want to see what the generator is capable of handling during a power outage? Other than what you were told.

Whole House Circuit Only

You may want to hire an electrician that has a amp clamp. turn on al your essential circuits and measure for 15 -20 min record in rush amps as well. As you add each additional light monitor amps. a safe load percentage According to NEC for your 20 kw is about 75% load capacity. 65 amps is a safe number. The rest can be used for surge and in rush amps.

Now if you want to know what is hooked up to your emergency panel . Simply turn all lights on and take notes what you have turned on .Kill service entrance breaker and review notes . Whatever is on after generator has took over is Emergency whatever stays off is non emergency . Wall plugs usually are on same breaker that your lights for each room are on .
I hope this helps

To test your automatic standby generator for functionality in the event of a utility outage, we would recommend staging such an outage, by setting the unit in the AUTO position, and disconnecting your home’s panel from a main utility feed. We would recommend having this task performed by an independent authorized dealer in your local area. To locate an independent authorized dealer closest to you, please use your postal code for searching purposes via the following link: http://www.generac.com/dealer-locat....

We design standby generators specifically for extended run times, so having it run for a week or longer is definitely possible. Your only limitation is the fuel type, meaning the size of your propane tank or the supply of natural gas. For natural gas at ½ load, the 20kW uses 206 cubic feet per hour. For liquid propane at ½ load, the 20kW uses 1.89 gallons per hour. Refer to the 20kW spec sheet for additional fuel consumption data. http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

We also recommend stopping the unit and checking the oil after 24 hours of straight operation and performing scheduled maintenance after 200 hours of operation.

Typically it is more expensive and costly to run gas line since it needs to be trenched when compared to the electrical that can be run in the house. If it is a finished basement, then it really depends on the situation.

The data label is located inside of the generator near the control panel. For a diagram on where it's located on the 8kW and 20kW, please refer to page 6 on the owner's manual. This manual is shared between the 8kw - 20kW.

Manuals can be found on http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu... by entering in your seven-digit model number. Be sure to enter in your model number starting with two or three zeros without any dashes or spaces. For the 8kW, Model 5870-0 should be entered as 0058700.

Question

Main Line Circuit Breaker

It is good to have protection for the generator, but it seems counter-intuitive to have the generator shut itself off if there is too much demand. This would be especially important if I am out of town and not in a position to turn off circuits and flip the switch to get the generator back on line.

I plan on getting a 20kW unit installed, which seems to be sized correctly for my house - and we would conserve power if in use. I would also shut down unessential circuits if going out of town. However, does the generator have the ability to restrict certain circuits so the demand does not overload the generator? Is there any control in the base model without accessories that provides this type of control?

With Generac's Nexus Smart Switch, you can manage two 24V HVAC loads without any additional components. This will keep the generator from overloading. If you have other high-demand loads that could potentially overload the generator, you can add up to six additional digital load management (DLM) modules.

There are so many factors that can affect the gas pressure that we recommend an onsite inspection and professional recommendation by a LP gas professional. However, we are able to provide you with the fuel consumption rates and required water column which will help provide the correct size needed for installation. The required fuel pressure to the generator fuel inlet at all load ranges is 10 to 12 inches of water column for LP gas. Fuel consumption at full load is 2.9 gallons/hour. For additional information, please consult the spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...
