The 20kW Guardian Series automatic standby generator has an hour meter that can be viewed on the generator’s control panel. To determine the hours of run time on the unit, you will navigate the control panel to the Status Menu, select the Display option, and choose Engine Hours. This will show the total run time of the engine in hours. Please see the attached menu map for assistance. The menu map is also located in the owner’s manual for the unit. To locate a copy of the owner’s manual, search the model or serial number for your unit here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

Question

If I change oil and filter myself does it void my warranty?

For my new 20kw Guardian, if I follow all break in times and oil recomendations in my owner's manual, and use Generac brand oil and filter, does changing the oil and filter myself void my warranty?

Specifically, do all oil and filter changes have to be done by a Generac dealer to maintain warranty coverage? (Unit was installed by Generac certified dealer)

Maintenance on the automatic standby generator is not required to be performed by a certified servicing dealer. The owner’s manual provided with the unit will include maintenance steps for items such as changing the oil, but if you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with the required maintenance, our certified servicing dealers are able to provide service for the generators. Performing the maintenance on your own unit would not void the factory warranty unless the unit becomes damaged due to improper servicing. Please ensure that any and all maintenance performed is fully documented, as proof of maintaining the unit may be required for warranty claim purposes.

For our automatic standby generators, if you expect the temperature to drop below freezing, we recommend utilizing a 5W-30 Synthetic oil. Synthetic is a good oil to use if you are looking for a general year-round oil for areas that have significant season changes.

Our current production models do not list the 8 hour break in period as the new engines no longer require a break in. This eliminates the need for the 8 hour oil change, and will allow the oil to be changed immediately to a different weight for operation in colder temperatures. We recommend checking the Service Schedule in the owner’s manual to determine if your generator is exempt from the 8 hour oil change. To locate a copy of the owner’s manual, search the model or serial number for your generator here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

Question

Weight on Gas Connection Mounting Hole

In the process of installing the 20kW Guardian. Yesterday the propane company completed the final installation. What I see is 3/4" black pipe (6" length) threaded onto the generator's gas supply mounting hole. The installer also added a regulator and cleanout (the latter also made of black pipe). All of this connects to a flexible connector (theirs, not the one Generac supplied with the generator) and finally to the flexible underground gas pipe. In all there are four 6" lenghts of black pipe, 3 - 90 degree elbows (black pipe), and a regulator hanging off the gas supply hole. There is no other support provided. Does this create a weight/torque problem when the generator is running (i.e., can the generator support this)?

Question

What is the correct LRA rating for the 20k model?

I have spoken to several certified dealers in my NJ area. I get conflicting information on what is the maximum LRA rating for the 20k (natural gas) model. One guy says its is rated for 145 LRA. The other guy says 112. Both are registered dealers, installers and certified repair techs. The 112 guy claims based on his experience AC systems drawing more than 112 LRA have actually experienced damage because there was insufficient kickoff amps despite the ratings for 145. So I am both confused and concerned since I will need to upgrade my AC unit and need to know what AC unit will work with this 20k machine BEFORE I go into this project. ie. What LRA max rating is completely safe for the new 5 ton AC that I will need to install?

A 20kW when running on propane can handle a maximum locked rotor amp (LRA) rating of approximately 145; we do not have a listed rating for operation on natural gas. The capability of the generator will decrease when operating on natural gas. Please keep in mind that this rating is the maximum for the unit, and other appliances and loads that will be on the generator need to be taken into consideration as well. We recommend speaking to your local Generac certified dealer or certified electrician to determine the proper size generator necessary for your application. For our automatic standby generators, if you expect the temperature to drop below freezing, we recommend utilizing a 5W-30 Synthetic oil, which can be used year round. We also recommend using a cold weather kit, which includes a battery warmer and a crankcase heater. The automatic standby units can be mounted to a concrete pad using the 1 3/16 ” diameter bolt holes in the interior of the enclosure. When the unit is delivered, there will be bolts already occupying those spaces, as that is how the composite mounting pad is connected to the base of the generator. You would remove the existing bolts in order to properly anchor the generator and composite mounting pad to your concrete pad. The bolts would be removed from the underside of the generator before placing it on the concrete slab, as they feed from the bottom, up. A diagram of the hole locations is included in your owner’s manual under the Installation Diagrams section. The bolt diameter should equal that of the existing bolts, and should be a height of approximately three inches; however, the distance as to which the bolts are sunk into the concrete would be determined either by your local inspector if mounting is required by local code, or by your installer to ensure that the unit is properly anchored.

The decibel ratings for our automatic standby generators are taken at a distance of 23 feet. Typically you will see a decrease in decibel levels the further away you are from the unit, but this is dependent on surrounding structures and environments. Due to the variable surroundings, we cannot accurately determine what the sound levels will be at other distances.

Question

Can I install both a 5928 and 5951 remote monitors on my 20KW system?

I recently acquired a Generac Guardian 20KW (005875-1) whole house backup system. It is working well. I've also installed the cold weather kit and a model 5928 remote monitor.

The instruction manual for the Basic Nexus Remote Monitor says that you can add a second remote display by simply pairing it with the first display's transceiver. While I am not planning to do this right away, I am curious how I can obtain a second remote display unit without buying a complete kit. Is there a spare part number that provides just the basic remote display? Is it the 0H8075 part number that's in the instruction manual? If so, what's the price?

Is the transceiver for the 5928 basic remote monitor compatible with the display unit for the 5951 advanced remote display? Or vice-versa? I've read the owner's manual for the 5951 and it clearly has a different interface to the controller electronics. If I were to decide to get the 5951 at some point in the future, will I be able to continue to use the remote display from my 5928? Is it possible to have both units installed in a single generator system? (I would imagine that I'd need to do a customer modification of the enclosure to provide a way to mount the second transceiver from the 5951 if the two displays can not be paired to a single transceiver, and I would not be surprised if the two have incompatible signalling, given how they obtain data from the controller module).

Some feedback on the 5928 kit: The mounting screws are really TINY and it's really hard to attach the transceiver housing without losing at least one of the screws (with its TINY washer) down inside the generator housing. I lost one of the screws that way. There are only two screws in the kit (with two washers). That's silly. You should have at least three screws and washers, and ideally they would be a size you can readily buy at Home Depot or Lowes, not something you might be lucky to find (after you read the parts list) at a really good local hardware store (my local True Value franchise stocks things like the 3mm x 12 machine screws and the 3mm washers, I got lucky). A more reasonable choice would be something that's small and self-tapping and readily available from many sources, with more than two of them in the kit.

The automatic standby generator, when paired with the Basic Nexus Wireless Remote Monitor, is able to support a second display monitor. This second display monitor can be ordered through your local certified dealer. Pricing and availability would be provided to you by the certified dealer. To locate a certified dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....
When the generator is paired with the Advanced Nexus Wireless Remote Monitor, it is only able to support one single display monitor. The generator is not able to utilize both the Basic and the Advanced Nexus Wireless Remote Monitors at the same time, as they do not utilize the same transceiver.
We also thank you for your feedback regarding the installation of the wireless remote monitor. Your comments and suggestions have been forwarded to the appropriate persons.

The 20kW unit can cover a wide range of household appliances and items, however the exact items it can cover will vary for each application. The 20kW automatic standby generator is rated for a continuous output of 20,000 watts when utilizing propane, with a rated amperage of 83.3 amps at 240 volts. When utilizing natural gas, the unit is rated for a continuous output of 18,000 watts, with a rated amperage of 75 amps at 240 volts. You will want to ensure that all of the items you intend to run will not exceed this rating.
The breaker on the generator is designed only as accidental overload protection. If you are concerned that the loads you will be applying to the unit will immediately overload the generator, the generator may be too small for your application. To prevent this, the generator can be installed in many different configurations, including configurations where multiple transfer switches can be utilized, or sub-panels can be protected, provided the installation meets all local, state, and national codes. We recommend contacting your local certified sales dealer for sizing assistance. To locate a certified sales dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

During cranking, if the Control Board does not see a valid RPM signal within three (3) seconds, it will shut down and lock out on RPM sense loss. While the engine is running, if RPM signal is lost for one (1) second the Control Board will shut the engine down, wait 15 seconds, then re-crank the engine. If no RPM signal is detected within the first three (3) seconds of cranking, the Control Board will shut the engine down and latch out on RPM sense loss. If the RPM signal is detected, the engine will start and run normally. If the RPM signal is subsequently lost again, the Control Board will try one more re-crank attempt before latching out and displaying the RPM sense failure message.
If this alarm continuously appears when you attempt to start the unit, we would recommend contacting a Generac certified service technician. To find one in your area, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....
