The 20kW automatic standby generator meets NFPA 37 in regards to installation near a structure. Please see the attached diagram for installation distances. We recommend consulting with your local inspector as local codes may vary and will supersede manufacturers recommendations.

This is a difficult question to answer but we get it all the time. The equipment itself is a standard price. Installation is sometimes very simple depending on the location of the generator. We found that using the load centers can save customers a lot of money for time and materials for the electrical install. If the unit is propane, many times the propane company will install the piping for a lower price in order to gain you as a customer to buy fuel from. There are many variables with every installation. We usually can give customers a range on what it will cost based on previous installs. Best thing to do is call and have us come out to give you a more accurate price on the entire job. We offer turn key installation and back it up with certified tech's to handle any service/warranty work. We always have someone ready to answer your call and answer any questions you may have. - John - Bay State Generator

Installation really varies, due to the specific needs of every customer, as well as local building codes and requirements. We recommend contacting a local Generac dealer to find out the particular cost of an installation at your home. Scott, our installer poured a concrete pad and bolted our 20Kw Guardian to it. We just had a five-day outage, and cannot say enough good about this unit. It seamlessly kicked in, and just as seamlessly shut off when power was restored. It's much quieter than our old unit too. We're on a well, and our unit is hooked up to our LP tank, underground. No worries.

The previous 'answer' states the info about mounting too concrete is located in the Owner's Manual. I have Owner's Manual Rev A (06/01/11). Read the book from cover too cover and the only thing specified about concrete base slab is:

Reference page 11 Para 1.12.1

Special attention should be given to the concrete base slab which should exceed the length and width of the generator by a minimum of six (6) inches (0.152 meters) on all sides.

Yes, it is possible to mount all automatic standby generators to a concrete pad. This is commonly done in areas where code requires a concrete pad. The generator can either be mounted directly to a concrete pad after the composite pad is removed or with the composite pad in place, as well. There are 4 mounting holes that are inside the generator for this purpose This information can be located in the owner’s manual.

For liquid propane at ½ load, the 20kW uses 1.89 gallons per hour. You can use this to size your LP fuel tank to accommodate the amount of running time you prefer. Refer to the 20kW spec sheet for additional fuel consumption data. http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

Question

How often should you run a loss of power simulation if your utility company doesn't have a power failure over a long time period?

I understand that the generator will run its weekly 12 minute engine tests if set up to do so, but this only tests the engine... the electrical generating capacity and the automatic transfer switch will not be tested

If I don't experience a utility power outage for a long period of time, should I run a loss of power "simulation" by tripping the Generac 200 amp breaker on the ATS to test both the electrical portion of the generator and the Automatic Transfer Switch mechanism?

If yes, how often would you recommend running this test ?

Like yourself, I want to be able to disaster test the generator.

After speaking with my professional installer, I determined that the best way for me to simulate a loss of utility power was to kill the utility power by opening the 200 amp breaker at the top of the Transfer Switch.

By opening the breaker I interrupt the utility power to my house,

As soon of the utility power is interrupted the generator will start. It will take about 30 seconds for the generator to come up to speed. At this point will will hear a chunking sound from the transfer switch as the internal power relay is thrown.

After this sound your house power will be running from the generator.

I would test for at least 15 minutes (to properly exercise the generator). To complete the test, close the 200 amp breaker in the transfer switch to simulate the return of utility power. The generator will run for a few minutes after utility power has been returned and then the generator will turn off.

You have then successfully battle tested the generator.

The 20kW automatic standby generator is designed to test itself weekly for 12 minutes when installed properly; this exercises the engine and produces electrical output. During the exercise time, you will not see a transfer of power, but the unit is still producing electricity. If you would like to simulate a power outage situation, you will want to contact your installing electrician, as they will be able to provide you safe instructions on how to simulate an outage. Another way to test the system is with our Advanced Wireless Remote Monitor, which will allow you to run the generator and transfer function while you still have utility present.

He is concered about an outage, no one knowing and the generator running the propain tank dry. I have installed a full security system on the home. Is there anything on the gererator that can sent a signal to an alarm system that notifys when the generator starts and shuts off?

There is a contact that the generator pulls to ground to signal the transfer switch to activate. I wired this contact to a relay. The output of this relay I ran to my alarm system. I get a text message and an indication on the alarm keypads when the generator has transferred to backup power. While this isn't exactly the indication you are looking for, it's pretty close. I also wired the generator "trouble" contact closure to the alarm system. With the combination of these two signals to my home alarm system, I'm pretty confident of the state of the generator.

During times where snowfall is expected, you will want to ensure that snow and/or ice is cleared off of, and away from, the enclosure. There should be no snow piles or large accumulations of snow within three feet of the unit to ensure proper air flow if the unit were needed in an outage. If necessary, due to local codes or in areas with high precipitation, the unit may be installed on a structural steel base to elevate the unit. The base for the unit must be level, and meet all spatial recommendations in the manual, as well as comply with local and national codes.

You really want to keep the area around the unit free of snow as this is an 'air cooled' unit. I see you are from CT but I have the idea this is in the mountians somewhere. Perhaps you could put a snow fence around the unit to limit some of the snow, but you really need to clear around it.

You will want to contact your fuel supplier directly to discuss the cost of operation based on the consumption rates. The volume and pressure required for the 20kW unit at full load utilizing natural gas is 294,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” of water column. When operating at half load, natural gas consumption is 206,000 BTU/hr.

Question

How Long to Run a New Generator on the Non-Synthetic Break-in Oil?

The owner's manual states that the non-synthetic "break-in oil" in a new generator be changed after the first 8 hours of use (and every 200 hours or 2 years after that). The reason given is to flush out particles left over from manufacturing. Most car manufacturers have long advised that non-synthetic oil must be used in new cars to help seat the piston rings which would not seat as well if the engine is broken in by a synthetic oil which has better lubricating properties. Assuming the generator only goes through a weekly 12 minute exercise I would have to wait 40 weeks to get to the quoted 8 hours. But for the sake of the engine I would like to change to a synthetic oil as soon as possible, but I do not want to compromise the seating of the piston rings. What do you recommend I do? Thanks.

Our automatic standby units will need that non-synthetic oil for the first 8 hours, not only to flush out particles left over from manufacturing, but it in fact does help seat the piston rings. A synthetic oil will not allow the piston rings to seat properly, much like with an automotive engine. After that first 8 hours of run time, you can then perform a complete oil and filter change, and utilize a 5W-30 synthetic oil.

When properly installed, if the generator is switched to the OFF position and utility power is still available, the battery charger and cold weather kit items, such as the battery warmer, will continue to be powered using the available utility service. If the generator is switched to OFF during an outage situation where utility power is not available, the 7.5 amp fuse should be removed from the face of the control panel to prevent the battery from being drained, as there is no power provided to the battery charger or cold weather kit items.

The current models of automatic standby generators will have LED indicator lights on the side compartment of the generator. The yellow LED light will indicate that maintenance is needed. A yellow light on its own will not cause the unit to not start or run, but the generator control panel should be checked to determine the maintenance needed. The other lights that could be lit include a green or a red LED. A green LED light will indicate that the unit is in AUTO mode and is ready to run, or is running properly during a utility outage. The red LED will indicate either that the unit is switched to OFF or that there is an alarm detected. If red LED is present, you will need to check the generator’s control panel, as it will describe the type of maintenance needed or the alarm present. This information can be found in the owner’s manual as well. You can find a copy of the owner’s manual online by searching the model or serial number of the unit here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

The battery compartment is located in the lower right hand corner of the enclosure, below the control panel. To access the battery compartment you will need to remove the front panel of the enclosure. To do so, you will first need to open the top lid of the unit. Grasp the top of the front panel, and lift straight up, as if you are going to pull the panel over your head, and slightly towards your body. To replace the panel, align the bolts on the frame of the generator with the grooves on the front panel. Batteries for an automatic home standby must be purchased separately. The battery required for the 20kW unit is a Group 26R, 12 Volt, 525 cold-cranking amps minimum. We do recommend utilizing a wet-cell battery.

If you look closely at the meter you will see a rating for total CFH (Cubic Foot per Hour). The 200 KVa requires 290 CFH. If you have other gas appliances such as gas heat, etc you will need greater than a total of 290 CFH.

In Pennsylvania, PECO provides one of 3 meters, 270 CHF, 425 CHF, and 1000 CHF (this is a commercial meter). PECO upgraded me from a 270 to a 425 CHF meter and no cost.

I have attached a photo from my gas meter.

There are many factors that impact the sizing of the generator and appropriate fuel service. Most residential meters can accommodate 250,000 - 300,000 BTU. Accommodation must be made for additional NG appliances such as a hot water heater, dryer, etc. You might have to upgrade the meter to meet both the generator and other appliance demands.

Reference the fuel consumption on the 20kW spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

For a 20kW automatic standby generator on natural gas it will require 5-7” water column, and when utilizing propane it will require 10-12” water column. The pressure should never drop below 5” water column for natural gas, or 10” water column for propane. There should be no more than a 1” change in water column from the generator being static, to cranking, and to running. Any change larger than 1” water column will indicate an improper fuel supply to the unit.

Question

Oil change on new 20KW unit?

I will get a brand new 20KW the next days. I live in CT and it winter time is approaching, expecting temperatures below 32 degrees for an extended period of time. The unit comes from the factory shipped with the standard oil that does not seem to work well in the winter. However I read that it is recommended to keep the oil for 8 hours to break the engine in. Should I manually run the unit for 8 hours and then change to synthetic 5W-30 for the winter? Or can I change to synthetic 5W30 right away?

The appropriate intervals for oil changes and other maintenance items will be located in the owner’s manual in the Maintenance Schedule. Current production models do not require the 8 hour break in, so if the manual indicates you do not need the 8 hour break in you could change the oil and filter and switch to synthetic 5W-30 right away. If your manual recommends the 8 hours run time prior to the first oil change, we would advise against switching to synthetic until that time is up. The generator can either be allowed to run its exercises to meet the necessary hours, or you can manually run the unit more often than the pre-set 12 minute weekly tests to meet the 8 hour requirement.

Bob;

Most gas lines going into your home is 3/4 inch. I had to get a bigger gas meter to accomodate the 5 to 7 inch water column pressure requirements for the 20k. The gas company came out and changed out the old for new at no charge. With the bigger gas meter the 5 to 7 inches of water column (pressure requirements) were met. I then went with ( stil tapping off the 3/4 inch feed from the meter) to 1 1/4 inch riser all the way to the gen and then reduced back to 3/4 to hook up to the gen. me and my neighbor both did it this way and it worked fine, you should have no problem

The gas line should be sized by a Generac dealer or a certified plumber, based on the volume and pressure required. The volume and pressure required for the 20kW unit utilizing natural gas is 294,000 BTU/hr with 5-7” of water column, and if utilizing propane is 267,120 BTU/hr with 10-12” of water column.
