The 20kW automatic standby generator is compatible with the 200 amp Nexus Smart Switch, but may not be the appropriate switch depending on your particular installation. If the transfer switch will be utilized as the service disconnect, the transfer switch needs to meet or exceed your incoming utility service. We recommend contacting your local inspector for restrictions or sizing requirements if using the transfer switch as your service disconnect. In the event that the transfer switch will be used to power a subpanel, the transfer switch must meet or exceed the rating of the subpanel. The transfer switch rating should never be less than the amperage rating that is being fed through the switch. We recommend contacting a Generac certified dealer for sizing and compatibility assistance. To locate a certified dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

A unit will show an alarm of “undervoltage” if the generator voltage falls below 60% of nominal for more than five (5) seconds, and the unit will then shut down. Essentially, the generator control panel is seeing that the unit is not putting out the correct voltage, and shuts down to protect your appliances. If you are experiencing an undervoltage alarm, we would recommend you contact your local certified servicing dealer. To find a certified servicing dealer in your area, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

The gas line should be sized by a Generac certified installer or a certified plumber, based on the volume and pressure required. The volume and pressure required for the 20kW unit utilizing natural gas is 267,120 BTU/hour with 10-12” of water column.

The spark plugs for the 20kW automatic standby generator are located below the valve covers on each side of the engine; one spark plug is towards the front of the enclosure, while the other is at the rear.
The spark plug wire on the Guardian Series automatic standby generators can be removed without any tools, and only requires to be grasped firmly, and pulled out at the angle in which it is installed. The spark plug itself will need to be removed using a socket wrench; utilizing a shorter handled socket wrench, and placing the socket onto the spark plug first, and then attaching the socket to the handle, will allow for easier access of the rear spark plug. In the event that a better angle is desired, the lid of the generator can be removed to allow servicing from behind the unit. If any additional assistance or maintenance is required, we would recommend contacting a certified servicing dealer. To locate a certified servicing dealer, search your postal code here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

The flexible fuel line, as well as the other included accessories for the unit, will be located in the battery compartment, inside the generator enclosure. The battery compartment is located inside the lower right hand corner of the enclosure, below the control panel. To access the battery compartment you will need to remove the front panel of the enclosure. To do so, you will first need to open the top lid of the unit and then grasp the top of the front panel, and lift straight up, as if you are going to pull the panel over your head, and slightly towards your body. The flexible fuel line will either be included in the zip top bag with the other accessories, or will be zip-tied to the battery connection cables.
To replace the panel, align the bolts on the frame of the generator with the grooves on the front panel and slide the panel back in place.

Our home standby generators up to 48kw come set from the factory for natural gas but are easily field convertible to propane. To convert from natural gas to propane, and vice versa, you will want to reference the sections in the owner’s manual and installation guidelines titled “Reconfiguring the Fuel System.”

Question

6244 surge amps

I have seen indications that the 5875 has short-term surge capability of either 143 amps or 147 amps (according to different internet sources). What is the surge capability for the 6244 please? The Generac dealer I asked didn't know.

My concern is startup of my A/C condensers, which are 131 LRA and 170 LRA (though I hope to reduce these LRA needs by having hard start kits installed).

A 20kW when running on propane can handle a maximum locked rotor amp (LRA) rating of approximately 145; we do not have a listed rating for operation on natural gas. The capability of the generator will decrease when operating on natural gas. Please keep in mind that this rating is the maximum for the unit, and other appliances and loads that will be on the generator need to be taken into consideration as well. We recommend speaking to your local Generac certified dealer or certified electrician to determine the proper size generator necessary for your application. The 20kW automatic standby generator has a recommended service interval of every 2 years or 200 hours, whichever comes first. Proper maintenance includes changing the oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, adjusting the valve clearance, and attending to the battery as needed. A full maintenance schedule will be located in the owner’s manual under the Service Schedule section that includes intervals in which these items should be inspected and changed. A copy of the owner’s manual can be found by searching the unit’s model or serial number here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu....

Generac designs our standby generators with sound attenuated panels and an aluminum, steel, or composite enclosure to minimize noise whenever possible. You can also set the day and time of the weekly exercise cycle to ensure the least amount of interruption. We do make our best effort to manufacture our home standby generators to meet the noise level expectations of our customers. However, there are certain elements of operation that must be considered with an air-cooled engine driven product such as air flow requirements that limit our ability to further sound-proof the enclosure. The 20kW automatic standby generator, at a distance of 23 feet, has a decibel rating of 66 while operating at normal load. Generac does not measure sound output from any other distance, and does not offer other accessories to allow for quieter operation, however, structural or decorative elements, such as a privacy fence, installed at an appropriate distance away from the unit may assist in reducing the noise experienced at a property line.

Question

can a single generator be hooked up to 2 transfer switches?

I have 2 200 amp panels, and the first 2 Generac dealers I met with suggested I get a single 200 amp transfer switch, powering one of the panels, and during installation switch around circuits between my 2 panels so that 1 panel would cover essentials.

Another dealer suggested it would be cheaper for him to use 2 transfer switches (instead of using 1 transfer switch and switching around circuits between panels, which would be a lot of labor). Can the generator be hooked up to 2 transfer switches at the same time?

Our automatic standby generators and transfer switches can be installed in multiple configurations, including configurations where multiple transfer switches can be utilized, provided the installation meets all local, state, and national codes. Factors such as ease of installation and required updates to the existing electrical set up will affect installation costs. Based on your description above, either installation would be acceptable per our manufacturer’s requirements.
In the event that multiple transfer switches will be utilized, the certified installer or certified electrician should call us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722). Please ensure that the caller has the model and serial number on hand for the generator and transfer switches being utilized.

Lainey,

There should be no problem switching the unit off every night.

Indeed, Generac recommends powering off the unit every 24 hours to check the oil level.

What is your fuel source, natural gas or propane? I could understand your desire to conserve propane as there could be delivery problems in the event of a severe situation.

I am powered by natural gas and in the event of an extended blackout, I plan on running my unit 24/7. I purchased the unit for such an event, and other than to periodically check the oil level, there is no reason to shut it off.

I hope this helps.

Bear,

The generator is designed to operate from a range of -20F to 120F. However at the extreme ends of this range engine power (ie the amount of power the unit can generate) will be diminished.

I could find no reference to humidity in the manual.
