Yes, if you are powering less with your generator, it will consume less fuel. At 1/2 load, the 20kW consumes 1.89 gallons per hour, and at full load it consumes 2.90 gallons per hour.

Question

Help me understand what it will cost per day to run this unit?

If I am understanding this correctly at 1/2 load this unit would consume 1.89 gallons of LP per hour. This would mean that if we lost complete power it would consume around 45 Gallons per day?

The cost for propane in NJ is approximately $3.89 a gallon, This would mean that it would cost around $175 a day? This cant be right can it?

So if we were out for 4 days like we were the last time we went out it would have cost us $700 in fuel for 4 days?

We spend much less than this using our current gas powered generator? Am I just calculating something wrong?

Your logic is correct; however, this is assuming that your generator is constantly running at 1/2 load. There may be times when you are not using as much power in your home, so your actual cost could be less. You can also choose to only operate your generator at certain times, by turning it off manually at the control panel.

The generator has external indicator lights that show generator status. If the light is green, then the generator has performed its weekly exercise and is ready to operate in an emergency. Otherwise, you could invest in one of Generac's wireless remote monitors. To learn more, visit http://www.generac.com/Residential/...

The need for a concrete pad is dictated by your local building codes. If your local code authority does not require it, the generator can be placed on pea gravel using the included composite mounting pad. If required, then consult your local building codes to see if it must be anchored.

For all load ranges, the fuel pressure at the generator fuel inlet should be 5 - 7 inches of water column for natural gas and 10 - 12 inches for LP. For additional fuel consumption information, please see the spec sheet for this unit at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

Most homes today have a 200 amp service. If all the circuits in the panel want to have access to the power from the generator, an identical service rated switch is required (200 amp). Not all circuits pull power at the same time, so the unit will never be asked to produce 200 amps. If a smaller service such as 100 or 150 amps is present, service rated switches for those amperages are available as well.

Question

On auto start, unit sputters and I smell gas. On manual start, it runs fine. Why?

When it starts on auto as part of its weekly cycle, engine will initially rev high and then reduces to a constant sputtering and I smell natural gas. I shut off and then power on via manual switch and it revs up high and stays running normally, with no gas smell. What is the cause?

Our 17kW and 20kW home standby units run on a low speed, “Quiet-Test” exercise mode. The engine RPM during this low speed test is 2400 RPM. If you are experiencing issues while it is running in the low speed mode, you can either turn off this option by going through the Nexus controller’s menu, under Main Menu/Edit/Exercise Time and select “NO” on the Quiet-Test option when prompted, or you can contact your local certified dealer and they will be able to make any necessary adjustments to allow your generator to run on the Quiet-Test mode. You can find a certified dealer in your area by searching here: http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal....

Question

How Long to Run a New Generator on the Non-Synthetic Break-in Oil?

The owner's manual states that the non-synthetic "break-in oil" in a new generator be changed after the first 8 hours of use (and every 200 hours or 2 years after that). The reason given is to flush out particles left over from manufacturing. Most car manufacturers have long advised that non-synthetic oil must be used in new cars to help seat the piston rings which would not seat as well if the engine is broken in by a synthetic oil which has better lubricating properties. Assuming the generator only goes through a weekly 12 minute exercise I would have to wait 40 weeks to get to the quoted 8 hours. But for the sake of the engine I would like to change to a synthetic oil as soon as possible, but I do not want to compromise the seating of the piston rings. What do you recommend I do? Thanks.

Our automatic standby units will need that non-synthetic oil for the first 8 hours, not only to flush out particles left over from manufacturing, but it in fact does help seat the piston rings. A synthetic oil will not allow the piston rings to seat properly, much like with an automotive engine. After that first 8 hours of run time, you can then perform a complete oil and filter change, and utilize a 5W-30 synthetic oil.

The current model units are compatible with most sensitive electronic equipment, however we have not specifically tested the units with Lutron lighting systems.

The exhaust on an automatic standby generator should not be redirected, as this can interrupt air flow and cause overheating of the generator, and also can void the unit’s factory warranty. It is recommended to ensure proper clearance around the unit from any plants or shrubbery as this unit does produce heat. The distance requirements found in the owner’s manual for any larger plants or shrubs is a minimum distance of 5 feet from the unit. This not only protects the plants from the heat, but also prevents ignition of flammable materials due to the heat this unit can produce.

The software and hardware versions installed on the control panel of your generator will not need updating. These units do not communicate via internet connection, and therefore will not need updating like a computer or game console would. The only event that would cause an update to the hardware and software versions for your generator would be if the control panel itself were entirely replaced.

Question

Start time after power outage and battery maintenance

I've been doing some research on the 5875 20kw guardian unit. I do see that there's a 10 second delay from the time the power goes out until the unit starts up. Can this be changed to say, 30 seconds? The reason being is so that the generator doesn't try to start itself up multiple times if the power only goes out for a half of a minute. And also, should I trickle charge the battery so often so it doesn't lose its charge, or does the alternator on the unit keeps the battery at a strong charge?

The 20kW automatic standby generator has the option to delay start up during an outage from 10 seconds to a maximum of 30 seconds. This can be easily changed at the generator’s control panel under Startup Delay in the Edit menu. Please see the attached menu map for the Nexus controller to help you navigate to the Startup Delay item. The battery charger is integrated into the control panel of the generator. The T1 line that goes from the transfer switch to the generator will provide the power to the battery charging system. This T1 line requires 120 volts on the load side (from utility), and will need to be installed by a certified installer or electrician as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit.

The gas line should be sized by a Generac certified dealer or a certified plumber, based on the volume and pressure required. The volume and pressure required for the 20kW unit utilizing natural gas is 294,000 BTU/hour with 5-7” of water column, and when utilizing propane is 267,120 BTU/hour with 10-12" of water column.

The appropriate intervals for oil changes and other maintenance items will be located in the owner’s manual in the Maintenance Schedule. Current production models will not require that the oil be changed at the 8 hour mark, you can check your owner’s manual to determine whether or not your generator is exempt for the 8 hour oil change.

When properly installed, if the generator is switched to the OFF position and utility power is still available, the battery charger and cold weather kit items, such as the battery warmer, will continue to be powered using the available utility service. If the generator is switched to OFF during an outage situation where utility power is not available, the 7.5 amp fuse should be removed from the face of the control panel to prevent the battery from being drained, as there is no power provided to the battery charger or cold weather kit items.
