To safely maintain the life of the battery, adding distilled water will help to maintain the fluid levels in the battery. Additionally, there are multiple warning messages that pertain to the battery on your unit. Each particular message requires different tasks to be performed, in order to remedy each situation. As the first step in addressing the issue, clearing the message requires setting the AUTO/OFF/MANUAL switch to the OFF position. Then press the ENTER key to unlatch any active fault and clear the corresponding alarm message. If the alarm returns, we would recommend either contacting Generac at 888-GENERAC (436-3722) for specific solution recommendations, or contacting a local service provider. Question

Natural gas Pressure

I am purchasing a Guradian Series 20Kw and have 14 inches water column pressure at my meter. Does this need to be regulated down to 7 inches per the specification ?

Your spec reads, "Required fuel pressure to generator fuel inlet at all load ranges - 3.5-7" water column (7-13mm mercury) for natural gas"

Brian,

14 inches of pressure sounds to me like the pressure for a commercial property, as compared to a residential property. Be that as it may, yes, you will need to further reduce the gas pressure to the range of 3.5 -7 " water column.

Your plumber, or gas company, should be able to place a second regulator in the line for your generator.

Good luck,

Question

Starting kVA for Guardian 20kW?

I've looked through the owner's manual and data sheets, but I have yet to find a starting kVA rating (20kW model 6244 or 6250). Typically, a residential standby generator will specify a starting kVA or motor starting kVA rating such as 40kVA @ 240V with 35% voltage drop. What is the starting kVA rating of the 20kW model 6244 or 6250? I'm operating on LP not NG?

The 20kW 120/240V single phase generator is also rated at 20kVa. Single phase generators have the same kW rating as kVa rating. There would only be a difference between kW and kVa if it was a three phase generator. The unit has a continuous load rating of 20,000 watts (kVa). I hope you find this information to be helpful.

Question

Does one have to remove the composite base in order to fasten the 2oKW to the GENPAD?

My Generac Guardian 20 KW generator came with a concrete GENPAD. The installers couldn't figure out how to fasten the generator to the GENPAD without unscrewing and removing the composite base from the generator first. Is that the expected procedure? Your manual's installation instructions are very vague about this. Having removed the composite base, we can no longer use the fascia. Should we have done something differently?

One does not need to remove the composite base of the generator to fasten a 20kW unit to the GenPad. By removing the existing bolts from the unit and replacing them with longer bolts (to be provided by installer), the GenPad can be mounted to the generator with the composite pad still intact.

While there is no particular recommendation for the time allotted for a unit’s self test, it is often beneficial to schedule the weekly test for a time when someone will be home to ensure that the generator is starting, running, and stopping as it properly should. If you face issues with a consistent schedule and need more flexibility for monitoring purposes, Generac’s advanced wireless sensors enable end user’s to track weekly tests, and to report any error conditions on the unit as well.

I do not lock the lid to my Generac, if I need to get in I do not want to be looking for my key.

After several rain storms the unlocked lid maintained a good seal. So no need to lock the lid to get a seal.

Rick,

Generally the regulator is located at your gas main, and is part of the gas meter. You are able to adjust the gas pressure from this regulator.

You will branch off your gas line to the generator from the meter, or suitable gas line in the house.

I hope this helps.

Rob,

It really is a matter of feel and experience. Start pouring oil in at a slow rate and gauge how fast/far the level rises. Continue until you reach the proper level.

The total oil capacity is around 1.9 quarts.

If you fill to high you can always drain some out.

John,

I have found that the biggest problem in battery placement/replacement is the amount of room Generac allocates for the battery.

As long as it is physically the same size you are fine. You can always increase the cold cranking amount, but I would not recommend decreasing it from the stock battery.

I hope this helps,

If you have the unit professionally installed, the installer will include a battery.

If you do it yourself, the battery is not included. The flex line is included in the packet containing product information (inside of the unit).

The 20kW automatic standby generator will have the control panel and the composite mounting pad already installed upon purchase. The unit will need to be installed as described in the installation guidelines that are provided with the unit, and connected to an automatic transfer switch. Items needed for a complete installation will be the automatic transfer switch, the wiring for the generator and transfer switch system, the pea gravel base or concrete slab for proper mounting of the generator, the fuel supply line, and the battery.
A cold weather kit and/or a wireless remote monitor may be added to the system at any time if desired, as no additional wires are required from the transfer switch to the generator. Both of these optional kits will include the appropriate wiring harness to be installed within the generator.

Question

How can I elevate the generator?

Hurricane Sandy destroyed most of my house. As I am rebuilding, I would like to protect my home from future hurricanes and subsequent flooding.

How can I elevate a natural gas generator so that it is several feet above the ground? We received 7.5 feet of water during Sandy. Even if I can't get the unit safely to an eight foot height, could I build a wooden platform five feet above ground? Could a cement pad be placed on top of the wood? If the generator takes in any salt water, will it work?

Thank you!

Desperate,

Yes you can elevate your generator; but you cannot use any old type of building materials to do so. The best bet would be to construct an elevated metal support with a non-flammable base to support the generator. You will probably want to bolt the generator to the base.

The key is that the support structure has to be constructed from non-flammable materials.

If the generator takes on any water; especially salt water (due to its corrosive nature), you should not use the generator until it has been fully inspected by an authorized service person.

The additional issues with putting the generator on an elevated platform is that you are now likely to be at a height level where windows and other openings to the house have to be carefully considered. In brief you need to have the corners of the generator at least 5 feet away from any opening. I would even recommend a much greater distance between the forced air exhaust and any opening to the house; and do not cheap out on placing CO detectors in the rooms near the generator.

How are you powering the generator; natural gas or propane? You need to consider how a future storm will affect your ability to have an uninterrupted flow of fuel.

It may not be worth elevating the generator only to have your propane tanks washed away, or the gas company shutting down the gas mains.

You will have to check with your propane distributor to see if they can elevate the tanks. Also, if you are going with propane you should plan on at least a capacity of 500 gallons if not more.

I hope this helps.

Good luck,

Question

Installation distance from a basement window

Hi- I am curious if the air-intake side of the generator can be 3 feet from a basement window as long as the CO2 output side of the generator is more than 5 feet from any windows? My contractor told me that it is fine for the air-intake side to be 3 feet from a basement window as long as the CO2 output side is more than 5 feet. Hoping to confirm.

Thank you

Steve,

A couple of observations:

1) Page 12 of the Installation Guide indicates that the rear of the generator should be at least 18 inches away from the nearest wall, and that the right and left side need at least 3 feet of unobstructed space. Also you need 3 feet of clearance from the front on the unit.

Further, you need 5 feet of clearance in ALL directions from any opening to the house or shrubs over 1 foot high. The diagram on page 12 shows this 5 foot clearance being measured from the corners of the generator (as if you were drawing an arc).

Other questions to ponder:

1) Is the forced air exhaust direction free of all obstructions? You do not want to CO being forced back in. Could snow or other debris pile up?

2) Will the window be open or closed? If open, is there a draft that might pull the CO inside?

3) Can you seal that window?

4) You certainly want a CO detector inside of the window area.

Additionally, the forced air exhaust is quite forceful, and hot.

I know that the heat from the forced air exhaust can kill plants/vegetation directly in its path.

I hope this helps.

Personally, I would somehow seal that window to prevent airflow as well as place a CO detector nearby.

Good Luck

Question

I have a cedar sided house. Do I have to place this unit 5 ft. from the house? If so, it will interfere with interfere with other yard uses.

We also need to know how the base area should be prepared. We plan to place the unit on a relatively flat area. I have been advised by my installation electrical company that it should be sand and then a 3-4 inch layer of 2-3 inch rock. Area should be 3x5 ft. It appears that a 20kW unit will service my house of 3000 sq ft. Is this adequate or can I get by with a smaller unit of 11kW-17kW

TJPS,

I have seen reports that the powered exhaust can deleteriously affect gas and plants; the exhaust can get quiet hot/very warm.

However, thus far my local plants have been fine after about 6 months of weekly exercise usage.

Personally, I would recommend that you elevate your generator several inches above grade; you do not want the generator become awash in case of localized flooding. I have my generator sitting on a poured 6 4 inch concreate base that is sitting on 10 inches of stone. This way any water can pass through the stone and the generator should remain dry.

All things being equal, I would recommend the 20KW over the smaller units. Better to have too much capacity than not enough.

Since you are in Wisconsin you want to make sure that you keep the air input and exhaust free of snow buildup.

I hope this helps.

The gas line should be sized by a Generac dealer or a certified plumber, based on the volume and pressure required. The volume and pressure required for the unit can be located in the owner’s manual and installation guidelines that are provided with the unit. The fuel consumption for each model number can vary, and we recommend ensuring the documentation utilized reflects your particular generator’s model number. Bear,

The generator is designed to operate from a range of -20F to 120F. However at the extreme ends of this range engine power (ie the amount of power the unit can generate) will be diminished.

I could find no reference to humidity in the manual.
