Generac’s automatic standby generators are manufactured for outdoor use only. Moreover, proper spacing from any wall openings, structures, or surfaces should be followed, in order to properly install an unit within the parameters set in the unit’s owner’s manual; failure to follow these instructions will void the product’s warranty. Even if ventilation is provided to the storage space in which the unit is placed, an indoor installation is not recommended, as it can potentially lead to overheating and/or a deadly carbon monoxide gas build-up. Considering this, the unit should only be appropriately installed outdoors. If the generator is needed in an area in which snow build up is a common issue, please note that the unit’s owner’s manual recommends clearing snow from the vicinity of the generator, to ensure that it will operate appropriately, when needed. If you have any other product-related inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at 888-GENERAC (436-3722).

For the Guardian Series automatic standby generators, we recommend shutting the unit down after every 24 hours of operation to check oil levels and other maintenance items, such as the air filter. In the event that you will be away from the unit for extended periods of time, we recommend asking a trusted neighbor or family member to check on the unit in the event of an outage. The generator’s do feature a low oil pressure shut down alarm, however, allowing the unit to run at low oil can still cause permanent damage. Please note that these units are intended for backup power in the event of a utility outage, and that damage to the unit due to abuse, negligence, or use as a prime power source where no utility service exists is not covered under the product’s warranty.

A few factors play a role in determining a derated output for a particular generator. When sizing, it should be taken into consideration that the maximum power decreases about 3.5% for each 1,000 feet above sea level and will also decrease about 1% for each 6°C (10°F) above 16°C (60°F) ambient temperature, meaning a larger unit may be required to power the items desired to be covered during an outage situation. To determine what limitations a higher altitude will create for your unit, or to assess the appropriate generator for your home back-up power needs, we would recommend contacting an independent authorized dealer in your local area. Due to the fact that your required configuration is determined by various aspects such as the loads to be powered in an outage, the electrical set-up of your home, and the local codes or ordinances in your area, we are unable to determine which switch should be utilized in your existing installation. We recommend speaking with an independent authorized dealer in your local area, to determine the best generator and transfer switch set up for your application. To reset the Inspect Battery alarm, first inspect the unit’s battery and the associated connections to ensure that they will efficiently power the unit, when needed. Secondly, per the unit’s owner’s manual, put the unit into the OFF position via the unit’s control panel, and press the ENTER button to clear the alarm. Following these steps should also negate the alarm’s reading on the associated remote. Generac’s current 20kw Protector Series automatic standby generator, model RD020, features an enclosure that includes a critical grade muffler, which is mounted inside the unit to prevent injuries and maximize sound dampening. We as the manufacturer are unable to recommend making any modifications to the unit post-manufacturing, as such adjustments will void the product’s warranty. Question

Can I lock certain items out of the backup?

I have a Generac 20kw with the Smart Switch. I'd like to set up the system so that the generator does not try to run my pool pump and my heat pump style pool heater, both of which are tied into a subpanel. Is there a way to lock out the entire pool subpanel from being backed up, or at least the heat pump pool heater (which draws current similar to an air conditioner)? I was hoping that the Auxiliary Transfer Switch Contacts could be used for this, but it appears that those only work by interrupting the control wire of an appliance.

Auxiliary Transfer Switch Contacts can definitely be utilized to achieve your desires to lockout certain loads. Referring to an independent authorized dealer will ensure that a relay is appropriately configured with the auxiliary contacts; these contacts can interrupt control wires or an entire power line, depending on which relay is utilized. If you are interested in locking out specific loads, we would recommend communicating these desires to you local installer. While the Smart Switch utilized in conjunction with Generac’s 20kw Protector Series automatic standby generators is capable of shedding loads, an independent authorized dealer should be able to assist in configuring your unit’s setup to accommodate your backup power needs. To locate an independent authorized dealer in your local area, please use your zip code for searching purposes here: http://www.generac.com/dealer-locat.... Information regarding the appropriate process for disconnecting your unit’s battery from the built in battery charger can be found in your product’s owner’s manual and associated documentation. Please note that disconnecting the battery cables will prevent the generator from being able to operate. Lastly, please note that a third party charger should not be utilized on the battery while it is connected to the generator system, as the use of such products can cause irreparable damage to the generator and/or controller. If you do not have access to the manual provided with the unit, we would recommend accessing the product’s documentation online by using the unit’s model or serial number here: http://www.generac.com/service-supp.... Utilizing this method helps to ensure that you will be retrieving information specific to your particular model of our automatic standby generators.

When your control panel shows a red LED light, it is either recognizing that your unit is currently in the “OFF” mode, or there is an associated alarm message. We would recommend referring to your unit’s control panel to ensure that your unit is not currently experiencing an error code in association with a red LED light. If your unit is displaying an alarm message/error code, we would recommend consulting your manual for suggestions, or contacting an independent authorized service provider for diagnostic assistance. The serviceman probably did not reset the "oil change required" alarm. Open the top and hold down the enter button to reset the alarm. The yellow light should go off. If that doesn't work, check your manual or do an Internet search to find out how to reset the alarm. It's really pretty simple.

Question

I am planning a standby generator system for my home.

I have 400 AMP utility service split into (2) 200 amp (30) slot panels.
Each panel has a 60 amp breaker for the 2 electric heat pump furnaces in my home. I heat the house off one of the heat pump systems when we do not have guests to fill the 6 bedrooms. My question is do I need 2 disconnects or can I simply connect to one of the panels for standby power and is 20KW enough.
