Generac designs our standby generators with sound attenuated panels and an aluminum enclosure to minimize noise whenever possible. You can also set the day and time of the weekly exercise cycle. We do not offer other accessories to allow for quieter operation.

Question

Main Line Circuit Breaker

It is good to have protection for the generator, but it seems counter-intuitive to have the generator shut itself off if there is too much demand. This would be especially important if I am out of town and not in a position to turn off circuits and flip the switch to get the generator back on line.

I plan on getting a 20kW unit installed, which seems to be sized correctly for my house - and we would conserve power if in use. I would also shut down unessential circuits if going out of town. However, does the generator have the ability to restrict certain circuits so the demand does not overload the generator? Is there any control in the base model without accessories that provides this type of control?

With Generac's Nexus Smart Switch, you can manage two 24V HVAC loads without any additional components. This will keep the generator from overloading. If you have other high-demand loads that could potentially overload the generator, you can add up to six additional digital load management (DLM) modules.

Question

For LP hook-up, should the main line from the propane tank to the regulator be 3/4 inch pipe, or is 1/2 inch pipe sufficient?

Underground 250-gal propane tank is located 40 from where regulator enters house. Guardian 20kw to be installed near that regulator. Existing 40 ft buried main line from tank to regulator is 1/2 inch pipe. Is this sufficient to feed house and new generator, or should 1/2 pipe be replaced with a 3/4 inch pipe?

There are so many factors that can affect the gas pressure that we recommend an onsite inspection and professional recommendation by a LP gas professional. However, we are able to provide you with the fuel consumption rates and required water column which will help provide the correct size needed for installation. The required fuel pressure to the generator fuel inlet at all load ranges is 10 to 12 inches of water column for LP gas. Fuel consumption at full load is 2.9 gallons/hour. For additional information, please consult the spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

For liquid propane at ½ load, the 20kW uses 1.89 gallons per hour. You can use this to size your LP fuel tank to accommodate the amount of running time you prefer. Refer to the 20kW spec sheet for additional fuel consumption data. http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

Typically a #4 wire is used, but it may have to be a heavier gauge depending upon the distance between the generator and the transfer switch. We recommend consulting a Generac dealer for more information. You can find a dealer near you by visiting http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal...

Set Up and Programming

I am considering installing a 20KW generator in my home and my dealer says that I need to have them program and start up my unit which they want to charge me a lot of money to do. Is this something that either my electrician or I can handle?

There is an activation that needs to be done, but it can be done by a homeowner. However, a 20kW will require the electrician since they will need to pull the meter face for transfer switch installation.

Question

Fuel consumption and power output

I see on the spec sheet the natual gas requirement to run the generator at half load and at full load. Does the generator only run at those two speeds or does it run at variable speeds depending on the amount of power needed? For example, if my power went out and the only items in my house running required only 1kw to power them, what speed would the generator run at? Full load, half load, or something less than that?

The generator operates at a constant 3600 RPM, but will consume more fuel as more load is added. The full load and half load fuel consumption information is included as a benchmark. If your system is loaded at less than 50%, then your generator will use something less than the amount of fuel consumed at half load.

The "3000 hour" mark is not an absolute--only a milestone. The generator can run for a very long time with proper maintenance, and some individual components can be replaced to extend the life of the unit.

Question

If the Guardian Series 20kW generator is installed on pea gravel, how often does it need to be re-leveled?

I have a Guardian Series 20kW residential generator that is mounted on pea gravel. As the generator runs during the weekly tests, it seems to settle and is no longer level (by approximately 2 inches). Will I need to continue to re-level the generator to keep within the 0.5 inch recommendation found in the manual?

Question

Air Conditioner Surge

My understanding is that the 20kw model has a surge rating of 145 amps at a 30% voltage dip. If the Lock Rotor Amp rating on my 5-ton central air conditioner is 140, does that imply that the generator should be able to start the unit without a problem?

The generator's power output is affected by the fuel the system is using, the ambient temperatures during use, and elevation above sea level. To be sure that this model will power your central air conditioner, we recommend discussing with a licensed electrician or a Generac dealer (http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal...).

The dimensions (L" x W" x H") of this unit are 48 x 25 x 29. Generac recommends that a concrete base slab should exceed the length and width of the generator by a minimum of six (6) inches (0.152 meters) on all sides; this should easily accommodate the fascia.

You cannot turn the exercise cycle off. It is required for the generator to exercise once a week for 10 - 15 minutes to ensure that it will function properly during a power outage. You do have the ability to schedule when this occurs at any time of day or night, but it cannot be disabled.
