Question

Want manual/not auto startup after power failure

Hi,

I don't want the generator to run unless I tell it to. Except for exercise,
can I keep the unit in "Off" until a power failure. After the power fails, can I just switch it from "Off" to "Auto" and sit back?

Also, while the generator is running, can I just go from "Auto" to "Off" at night?

Thanks in advance,

The unit can be started and stopped manually, but it will not exercise if not in "auto" mode. To ensure that the unit runs reliably in an emergency, it's important that it exercises weekly. As a result, we recommend keeping the unit in "auto" mode.

Because automatic operation is a key benefit of a Generac home backup generator (and as such a feature that cannot be disabled without ramifications), might we suggest that you consider purchasing a Generac portable generator and having an electrician install an appropriate third-party manual transfer switch (Generac does not make manual transfer switches). We've included recommendations to several units below that might be a better fit for your particular application. A Generac dealer might also be able to recommend an appropriate manual transfer switch. To find a dealer near you, please visit http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal...

This generator requires a minimum of 3’ of clearance on either side of the unit to ensure adequate air flow for both cooling and exhaust. It also requires installation on a non-combustible surface, like a cement pad or pea gravel base. If you adhere to these requirements, there is no danger of a brush fire.

The generator's controller features a battery charge circuit that keeps the battery charged. Assuming the battery is in good working order, the battery will remain charged should you wish to shut the generator down overnight during an outage.

answer 1
Generac does not recommend using a 20lb LP fuel tank on any of our automatic home backup generators, for the simple reason that they will not fuel the generator for any length of time. A 20lb. tank holds a little over 4 gallons of fuel. Our 8kW home backup generator consumes 1.68 gallons of LP fuel per hour at full load. Given that consumption rate, you would have only a little over two hours of running time. We recommend sizing your fuel tank to deliver a longer running time that is appropriate for your needs. To get more information on fuel consumption, please see the spec sheet at http://www.generac.com/SpecSheets/0...

The battery charger is integrated into the generator's Nexus controller. It is fed by the utility sense wires when utility power is available and from generator power during generator operation. It brings in the AC power (either utility or generator power) and converts it to DC to send back to the battery and supply the DC operating system.

Question

Is there a minimum loading requirement for the Guardian Series generators?

At night the activity in my home will drop. Many of the power consuming appliances and lights are now turned off. The only activity may be the refrigerator and heating system, both of which only run periodically. Consequently, the power demand on the standby generator will drop very low, possibly less than 100W. Will this cause excessive motor wear? How does the generator handle low power consumption conditions?

This is perfectly acceptable, and will not cause any damage to the generator. During these times the generator will essentially be functioning at a low level, like when it exercises. But it will not cause any damage to the unit in any way.

One way to figure this out is to document the running watts of all the appliances you plan to back up. That way you can do an inventory of the appliances you're using at any given time and do some quick math to see how much power you're consuming--and thus how much the generator is supplying. If your calculations tell you that you're in the neighborhood of 4,000 watts (4kW), then you'll know that the generator is running at about 1/2 load. If you're consuming between 4000 and 8000 watts at any given time, then you can predict fuel consumption somewhere between 1/2 and full load. In this way you can monitor your power usage and fuel consumption.

Another option is to invest in a home power monitor that can tell you at a glance how much power you are consuming. Such a monitor can also be useful when using utility power, as it can help you identify ways to conserve electricity and reduce your utility bills.

The generator has a 30' whip which can be extended an additional 15' with the same gauge wire. Beyond that the conductors need to be upsized to the next gauge. Question

Differences between Guardian 8K and Centurion @ Lowes

Are there any differences between the Guardian 5870 and the Lowes Centurion 5891? The manual for the Guardian is copyright 2011 and the Centurion is 2010. Does this mean the Centurion is a slightly older design?

Also will any Generac service provider service the Centurion or do I have to go through Lowes?

My suspicion is that they're the same (just rebadged) and that all parts, etc. are the same. I just don't want to run into service problems down the road and be told I can only have the Centurion serviced through Lowes.

Functionally these units are the same. The Centurion brand is sold exclusively through Lowe's stores. You will have no trouble getting either one serviced by a Generac servicing dealer; they are equipped to service either model.

Question

What is the wire gauge sizes in the model 5870 30 ft whip i.e 4 ower and 5 contol

In a previous question about extending the length. your response indicated that it could be extended 15 ft with the existing wire i.e to 50 ft. If not gauge would have to be changed,

This seems to infer that you can add the needed 15 ft by adding a connection box in order to splice in a 15 ft extension to the 30 ft whip.

Is that correct?

thanks

It is possible to start and stop the generator manually during an outage, but there is not currently a way for you to install a start/stop switch inside your home and do it that way. You must interact with the generator controller and your electrical panel in order to start and stop the generator manually.

Installation by a homeowner will not invalidate the warranty as long as the installation guidelines are followed. However, problems arising from an incorrect installation would impact the warranty coverage.

Generac always recommends professional installation of our home backup generators. Installing a home backup generator is not a do-it-yourself project, and having the unit installed by a professional is the best way to ensure trouble-free operation.

Question

Service required on 8 KW

I have a two year old Guardian series 8kw that has never been used except for the weekly 15 minutes of self-start battery charging. Thus total engine time is 26 hours. Is it truly necessary to change the oil, oil filter, and air filter merely because 2 years have elapsed-- well before 200 hours? This is what the instructions suggest, but I don't understand the scientific rationale.

Question

Does the Model 5870 generator throttle back with lower loads or does it essentially run at constant speed?

I have a new gasoline powered pressure washer that throttles back when not under load.

This is new feature my old pressure washer did not have.

I suspect the generac runs at a constant speed i.e no load and load same speed thus consuming fuel at a relativly constant rate.

Is there plans to provide an improved model that throttles back like the new gasline powered pressure washers ??

If your local codes will allow it, you can install this unit as close as 18" to your home, with a minimum of 5' of clearance on either side. You will find this information in the owner's manual; you can download it at http://goo.gl/oc13O. Be sure that before you install your unit you consult with your local code authorities to ensure that any of our recommendations meet your local building codes.

Engine horsepower can vary based upon the generator system and its application. Differences in generator output from model to model are due to differences in the alternator, not engine horsepower. When selecting a generator, the most important thing to consider is your power needs and choosing a generator that will provide the right amount of power for the tools and appliances you want to use.
