Question

Portable Generator Shelter

I know I need to run my new generator outside about 15 feet away from my house. Since it's likely that when I'll need it for backup power, the weather conditions will not be ideal, how well do I need to protect it from the rain/ and snow? I'm thinking about building a basic teepee style "sandwich board" cover out of two 4x4 pieces of plywood and a piano hinge (leaving two sides open for ventilation). Any suggestions/reccomendations?

While we appreciate what you are trying to accomplish, we do not recommend any kind of shelter or cover for the generator while it is in operation. Such a shelter/cover could impede ventilation, contact hot surfaces, etc., which could lead to safety issues, as well as result in issues with generator performance.

Generac does not test the sound level of its portable generators, because there is no industry standard, and any results could be misleading. However, the sound level of this generator is comparable to many portable generators on the market.

Question

Grounding a GP5500 connected to transfer switch

During an outage I would connect my new GP5500 to my home via a transfer switch using the cord with the l14-30 connector. When I wired the transfer switch, I connected the green ground wire to the panel ground bus. Is this sufficient ground or would Generac still recommend a grounding rod be connected?

We recommend consulting with an authorized Generac dealer who can offer advice based upon your specific application. To find one near you, please visit http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal.... Also, Generac portable generators require three-pole manual transfer switches. Additionally, because all Generac portable generators are bonded neutral and most manual transfer switches are floating neutral, you need a transfer switch that also switches the neutrals.

Question

Do not have one

On the GP5500 portable generator is the 2.3.2 120/240 vac 30 amp receptacle (in figure6) in the owner's manual protected with a GFCI breaker in it? If so, with the neutrals that are bonded to the frame, will this create a problem with an electrician who plans to hook up a interlock kit to my home circuit board? If this is not possible and the electrician instead hooks up a transfer switch alongside my circuit panel should such trabsfer switch contain a 3 pole switch that enables neutrals to be switched?

The 30A receptacle is not GFCI protected. However, for this unit to function properly with a manual transfer switch (we always recommend using a manual transfer switch with our portable generators), you will need one that is a 3-pole switch, and one that also switches the neutrals.

Can your GP5500 be converted to either propane or natural gas?

I read a previous question but the answer was not complete. Can the GP5500 be converted to LP and NG without warranty issues? If so, what aftermarket converstion kits are approved to use? The LP3250 is not enough power for my needs.

At this time, Generac does not offer any accessories or conversion kits for its portable generators to run on natural gas or propane. We also do not recommend such conversion, for safety and performance reasons. If you are considering a natural gas or propane generator, and need more than 3250 watts, we recommend Generac's CorePower automatic home backup generator. This unit runs on your home's existing natural gas or propane fuel supply, is connected directly to your home's electrical system, and turns on and off automatically in the event of a power outage. With an MSRP of $1799, it is comparable in price to many larger portable generators, but offers you the benefits of an automatic home backup solution.

What's the difference? It would appear only 500 running watts. You can go to the Generac website, www.generac.com and download the spec sheets for both the GP5000 and the GP5500. I think the GP5500 is just a newer model. The GP5000 is no longer featured on Generac's header page for the GP series, but you can search for it and read all the specifications.

Regarding model numbers, according to the spec sheets, the GP5000 is a model #5622-0, and the GP5500 is a model #5939-0.

Question

Fuel Leaking

I received this generator as an early Christmas gift. Started it once to verify everything worked and it did. A month and a half later I went to start it and before I could, gas started leaking from the carburetor the second I turned the fuel switch on. Why is that?

I get the "don't store with fuel in it" deal, but were talking a month and a half. Fuel was new when I put it in. So now what?

Can this be something else. I have read alot on the internet about this model leaking fuel. Is there some sort of recall on a specific part?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

The fuel bowl works much like your toilit. There is a float with a 'needle' on it, when the bowl fills up with gas the float rises and the needle closes off the fuel flow in the 'seat'. The needle and seat are two machined surfaces with no room for anything else between the mating surfaces but fuel. A small particle can cause the float to 'stick' open and the needle not to close fully. This is what it sounds like has happened to you. You said the fuel was new, was the gas can also? Was it clean? We have seen something as small as a dead spider in the fuel hold open the needle. I suggest you take it to your local Generac dealer and have them inspect the carb.

There are no provision to add an oil filter to the GP series generators. Oil filters also (usually) indicate a oil pump or pressurized lubrication system, the GP series are a splash system like those used on most smaller engines. If you maintain the correct service on this unit there is no need for an oil filter.
