Generac's approach to this whole issue seems silly. If the generator is so good and generates so much power, why can't it spare a little to automatically tricke charge the battery? And when they say to charge it via a regular wall outlet is rather difficult to do during a power outage! 'Sounds like another "Catch 22" for back-up power!

According to customer service, the reason Generac does not recommend charging the battery via one of its own 120v outlets is because commericial power is "cleaner" than generator power. Although it will work as a last resort, they don't recommend it. But if this is a problem for a little battery charger/transformer, then what about everything else in the house?

So my recommended solution is one of the following: Until Generac can supply a battery charger that is recommended to work with their own generator power, either 1) Call your local utility and find out when they plan their next 8-day power outage so you can be prepared, or 2) check and/or charge the battery via commerical power once a week!

Yes providing the wattage does not exceed the size of your generator. Some plasma TVs are more sensitive to generated power so pay close attention to how the TV behaves while on the generator.

If at all possible avoid outside storage. Cold weather will affect the starting of your generator and the battery will not keep a charge.

It is possible you have a defective valve but you probably did not run the unit long enough after shutting the fuel off. It can take 5 minutes or more for the gasoline in the carb. to be used up.

From my own personal experience, with the proper wire size, you can locate the generator 150ft from the transfer panel. In my own appication, the generator is located in my tool shed with the doors propped open (just in case it rains or snows!) A 50ft L14-30R cord connects the generator to the power inlet. From the power inlet to the transfer panel I ran a 6-guage, 3-conductor, grounded "service" cable to minimize the volatage loss.

During my "field test" last week, I measured only 0.1v loss between the 250v generator outlet and my transfer panel--a total distance of 147ft (97ft of #6 guage cable plus the 50ft generator cord)--and the generator carried the load effortlessly.

You can use synthetic oil, however, we recomend you do not use synthetic until you have run the unit for at least 25 hours to allow proper break in of the internal components.

Yes it is regular motor oil, the same you would us in your car. In very cold weather you can use SAE 5W-30, in most normal operating situations SAE10W-30 is fine. Please remember to us a good, name brand oil, not an off brand or store brand.

You could use a cable with a 30A end for the generator and and 20A end for your home. Just make sure the cable is good for 30A and the manual transfer switch has a fuse or circuit breaker rated at 20A only.

There is no per set time (like on air plane engine which must have major overhauls at pre-set intervals) when this engine needs to be replaced or overhauled. You should expect many years of service from this unit if maintained in perfect condition and stored under ideal environmental conditions.

With any new engine it is always a good idea to change the engine oil at about 8 hours to remove any 'break in' material.

The charger provided with the unit is intended to be utilized once a month for 24 to 48 hours to ensure optimal battery performance. If the battery has not been recharged periodically as described above, it may be dead. A dead battery will not accept a charge and will need to be replaced.
