There are two model years of the XP Series generators on the market today. The earlier model that is sold at Lowes includes some of the standard features of our latest XP model, such as a Generac OHVI engine, TruePower Technology, and 10 hours of run time at 50% load. However, it does not include a lifting eye, idle control, and one L5-30R outlet.

First I'd like to start by sayin I am a licensed master electrician and electrical contractor.
Due to the GFCI protected 240v receptacle it will not work with a standard transfer switch without a neutral isolation kit. I have even had problems with the XP series still tripping even after installing neutral isolation kit (the cause of that was a neutral touching a ground wire in a switch box in the house). A very frustrating and time consuming troubleshoot. The GFCI will trip if the neutrals of the circuits that are being backed up aren't isolated from ground.

Generac portable generators are bonded neutral. In order to work with a manual transfer switch, the transfer switch must be a 3 pole switch that also switches the neutrals.

In order for this unit to be OSHA compliant it utilizes a bonded neutral and full GFCI breakers, however my neighbor has been using this generator with the existing double pole transfer switch he had previous to purchasing this unit.

If you have any GFCI circuits existing on the circuits you want to power you will have to remove the jumper wire inside the alternator that bonds the neutral. This can be accomplished by any licensed electrician. The generators breakers will keep tripping if you don't. I wish Generac would manufacturer a unit for home use with the clean power of the XP but without the bonded neutral as it would make life easier for everyone. Are you listening Generac?

You need to purchase a 3-pole manual transfer switch which will switch the neutrals. Generac does not currently sell manual transfer switches. However, a Generac dealer might be able to offer you a third-party solution. To find a dealer near you, please visit http://www.generac.com/Service/Deal...

The XP8000E has one 240 volt capable receptacle, the L14-30R. The 120/240 receptacle will put out the voltage that is required by the item or cord plugged in to that receptacle, as long as a properly rated cord is being utilized.

National Electric Code requires that the frame and external electrically conductive parts of this generator be properly connected to an approved earth ground. Local electrical codes may also require proper grounding of the unit. Consult with a local electrician for grounding requirements in your area.

Our newest XP8000E includes several features that make it a more premium, contractor grade model, including idle control, an integrated lifting eye, full panel GFCI protected outlets, and a 3 year limited warranty.

The XG Series is designed for residential applications, with the PowerBar that monitors available wattage and a 2 year limited warranty. For less frequent home emergency use, we would recommend the XG8000E.

As a first step, refer to the troubleshooting guide in your owners manual. Manuals can be found on http://www.generac.com/Service/Manu... by entering in your seven-digit model number. Be sure to enter in your model number starting with two or three zeros without any dashes or spaces. For example, Model 5931-0 should be entered as 0059310.

We recommend checking the oil level, gasoline supply and contacting an authorized Generac Portable Service Dealer.

Question

I'm looking for a heavy duty generator cover for the XP8000E

Huuricane Irene just came through my area, I've learned a life's lesson the hard way. Looking for a generator and generator accessories during an area wide emergency is not the way to do this. When my brother-in-law told me how comfortable he was using a smaller product of yours during this storm, I new I had to have one. I live outside of Richmond VA and drove 180 miles to Roanoke VA to find your product.

Of course I had to find an electrician to hook this to my breaker box. I didn't want extension cords running through my windows. I found a qualified electrician. He made all of the connections except for the four prong cable that runs from the generator to the junction box on the outside of my house. Hopefully after everything calms down, I will be able to find the cable.

What other accessories do you recommend? I don'i want to play the (Find Generator/Parts/Accessories Game) ever again during a weather emergency. I want to be able to make that phone call back to my Brother-in-law telling him how comfortable I am next time.

Feel free to use this however; you think it will support the marketing of your products.

No, we do not make a housing for a portable generator. Running a portable generator indoors or in partially enclosed spaces CAN KILL YOU IN MINUTES. Exhaust contains carbon monoxide, a deadly poison gas you cannot see or smell.
